IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's time mordernisation has changed alot of things which includes making everything available on tip of our fingers, which includes the purchase of books or newspapers.

I partially agree to this situation as the experience of reading is fruitful only when books or newspapers are printed. Generally people who are fond of reading mainly prefer to have a physical copy of the content the are reffering which makes it much more enjoyable. Authors and publicaton houses depend on the readers entirely for the sales of their products.

However, accepting new technology is also very essential to survive in todays world. So I would agree to the statment of making the content available online is better to some extent as you can remotely access the information. People who are not much into reading have the options for listening to the content as well. Reading online also helps us to reduce paper consumption along with its wastage which is better for our environment. As the material is available online you get a variety of options to choose from rather than having limited number along with situations where certain books are not even avaialble offline. But also it could affect the offline stores where the sales could drop and such buisness owners would also face troubles for their marketing the products.

To conclude I would like to say that reading newspapers or books is preferable to some people where the business of authors and publishers stay intact but evolving with time is also necessary.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address the question and present a clear, qualified position: you partly agree that online access will replace print, while explaining why some readers still prefer physical copies. Relevant supporting points include remote access, listening options, reduced paper use, and the possible impact on shops and publishers. However, the discussion is uneven. The preference for printed reading is asserted rather than illustrated, and the point about authors and publishers depending on sales is not fully connected to whether people will stop buying print. The prompt also specifically says online material will be free, but this aspect is not examined. Develop the reasons on both sides more fully and explain how free access affects your final view.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting print, a longer paragraph discussing online access and its drawbacks, and a conclusion. This gives the reader an overall sense of progression, and linking expressions such as “However,” “So,” and “To conclude” help signal shifts. At times, though, the longer middle paragraph combines several distinct points—accessibility, listening, the environment, choice, and business effects—without enough separation or explanation. Some connections are also unclear, particularly the move from readers’ preferences to publishers’ sales. Organise the online advantages and the consequences for print businesses into clearer stages, and use references that make the relationship between each point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary, including “physical copy,” “remotely access,” “paper consumption,” and “offline stores,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “evolving with time.” However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural expressions reduce control: “mordernisation,” “alot,” “reffering,” “publicaton,” and “avaialble” are examples, while “the experience of reading is fruitful” does not express the intended idea naturally. Phrases such as “making everything available on tip of our fingers” and “their marketing the products” also need more idiomatic wording. Check spelling carefully and choose collocations that express your meaning precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “as,” “where,” and “which.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and accuracy. For example, “the content the are reffering” has an unclear pronoun and an incomplete verb pattern; “where the sales could drop” does not clearly connect the clause to its subject; and “business owners would also face troubles for their marketing the products” has an awkward grammatical construction. There are also issues with articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries, as in “limited number” and the long sentence beginning “As the material is available online.” Review clause structure and agreement, and break up sentences when several ideas are joined.
