IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In 21st century, people has their own thinking related to reading habits. The choice between a printed newspaper or books and online platforms totally depends on the person. In my perspective in the future they are going to be people who prefers reading online but there will be also people who likes to read in printed books or newspaper.

The online reading has it own advantages like people can access variety of books or newspapers within minutes with the capabilities of internet. They can easily access trending news or search for old news also because there are many platforms that keep the old news as well as new or trending news. Plus they do not have to carry books or newspaper with themselves because mobile can carry those for them. Internet is more preferrable for those who enjoy reading it online and feel comfortable with reading it from mobile and laptops.

In contrast, screen time of a person who is reading online increases that might damage their eyes and can cause a potential harm to their eyes. Also there are many negative news online which can also impact a person's mental health and total personality if exposed to too much negative news. Plus reading from online might cause a distraction too because a person might be doing something else rather than reading news or books. In such ways the printed copies can be suitable for those who does not want to give burden to their eyes and limit their exposure to the internet.

To summarize, their might be more people who choose online reading then printed newspapers or books. But I think their will not be nobody who will buy newspapers or books.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: online reading will become more common, but printed publications will not disappear entirely. You address both sides by discussing online convenience and the possible effects of screen use, and your conclusion directly answers the claim. These relevant points meet the task well. However, some ideas are more fully explained than others: the convenience of accessing current and older news is supported with detail, while the claim that negative news affects mental health and personality is asserted rather than illustrated. The response also focuses mainly on reading habits and health, with less attention to the statement that online material will be available without payment. Developing that aspect and supporting the less-developed points would make the argument more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs contrast online and printed reading, and the conclusion restates your position. Paragraphing helps the reader follow the main ideas, and transitions such as “In contrast” and “To summarize” make the direction of the argument clear. Some linking is repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “Plus,” and several ideas are joined in long sentences without clear internal organisation. References such as “those” in “mobile can carry those for them” are not fully precise, and the final sentence’s “their” makes the intended reference less clear. Use a wider range of linking methods and make references explicit to improve the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss the topic, including “access,” “trending news,” “screen time,” “mental health,” and “distraction.” These choices communicate the main points, and attempts at more specific language help the response go beyond very basic wording. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “the capabilities of internet,” “give burden to their eyes,” and “preferrable.” Repetition of “people,” “reading,” and “online” also limits flexibility. Aim for more natural topic-specific phrases and check spelling and word forms; for example, “the internet’s capabilities” and “strain their eyes” would express your meaning more idiomatically.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “because” and “if,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. Some sentences are controlled, such as “The choice between a printed newspaper or books and online platforms totally depends on the person.” However, errors in agreement, articles, and verb forms occur in several places: “people has,” “people who prefers,” and “there will be also people who likes.” There are also sentence-level problems in “In such ways the printed copies can be suitable for those who does not want,” where the subject and verb do not agree. Work on matching verbs to plural subjects, using articles consistently, and proofreading punctuation. Greater accuracy across your varied sentence structures would strengthen the response.
