IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

People in future are not going to purchase printed version of newspapers or books as they will be able to read them online without spening money. This future prediction is completely incorrect in my opinion. This essay will discuss why i completely disagree with this statement.

No doubt in future people are able read articles, novels and educational books completely online but most of the people prefer to read them physically because reading from mobile phones and laptops can cause problems to eyes as harmful rays of them can cause eyesight problems, irritation and redness. In addition, some individuals cannot concentrate when they are reading electronic books. They can lose their focus while reading due to the notifications and phone calls from their friends and they might open the apps or websites they enjoy the most while reading.

Additionally, all the reading material on internet is not completely free. People can read some portions of the books free but their complete versions are actually paid. For example, only interesting parts of the story are included in the electronic novels and to read the whole story you have to pay a significant amount. This marketing strategy is used by many authors to catch the reader's attention at start and later reading is willing to pay the amount to enjoy the rest of story.

In conclusion, printed books are not going to be completely replaced by the electronic ones because some readers prefer to read physical books and newspapers due to concentration and eye sight issues.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you “completely disagree” that printed material will disappear, and the conclusion returns to this view. You address both the continued appeal of print and the claim that online reading will be free, with relevant explanations about eye discomfort, distraction, and paid book content. The example of readers paying to access a complete story helps support the second point. However, the discussion of print preference is more developed than the claim about newspapers, and the online-payment example is somewhat narrow and generalised. To strengthen the response, explain more fully why people may continue buying printed newspapers and books, and make the supporting examples more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion restates the position. “In addition” and “Additionally” help signal the development of ideas, and the paragraphs are focused on distinct points. This gives the essay a coherent progression. Some connections are less smooth within sentences, particularly the shift from the marketing strategy to “later reading is willing to pay,” where the reference and relationship between ideas are unclear. The conclusion also repeats the main points rather than drawing them together. For stronger cohesion, use clearer references to people or readers and make the links between cause, example, and result explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “physically,” “concentrate,” “notifications,” “complete versions,” and “marketing strategy.” These choices allow you to explain both practical concerns about screens and the cost of online content. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural expressions, such as “harmful rays of them,” “catch the reader's attention at start,” and “the rest of story.” Spelling slips such as “spening” and “eye sight” also reduce accuracy. These do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument, but more precise collocations and careful proofreading would make the writing more natural and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “as they will be able to read them online” and a conditional structure in “when they are reading electronic books.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “people are able read” is missing “to,” and “most of the people prefer” has an unnecessary article. In “later reading is willing to pay,” the subject and verb structure is unclear; a clearer version would be “readers are then willing to pay.” Capitalise “I” consistently, and check articles, infinitives, and sentence punctuation. Greater accuracy across these structures would improve control.
