IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is believed by a few individuals that people will not buy printed newspaper or books because they can read everything they want on the social media without paying money. This essay will discuss that why I disagree with the given statement and discuss my own point of view.
On the one hand, people can gain their knowledge by reading books and newspapers. Apart from this books are also very essential for everyone. Newspapers contain news of all over the world. People can become socialise by reading newspapers. In addition, there are several types of books. For example, story books, cultural books and general knowledge books which can provide proper knowledge to people about the history of world and also books can join people to their culture.
On the other hand, in this contemporary era and in the future, people will be able to read anything online on their mobile phones or laptops. However, phones can also carry some false information. To justify it, some people make their fake accounts on very popular apps, such as instagram, facebook and youtube. People posted some false claims on their accounts which create many confusion around the people. Moreover, it can also create problems to people regarding their health. Mobile phones can affect on their eyes.
In conclusion, I totally disagree with this statement.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
Your position is explicit in the introduction and conclusion: you say you disagree, and the body includes relevant points about the value of books and newspapers and the risks of online information. However, the response only partially develops the question. The first body paragraph explains why printed materials can be useful, but it does not directly establish why people will continue buying them when online reading is free. The second paragraph focuses on false claims and eye strain rather than comparing the advantages of print with free online access. The conclusion repeats your view without summarising the main reasons. The response is also 29 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to develop and support your ideas. Explain your reasons more fully and connect each one directly to the prediction in the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs introduced by “On the one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a conclusion. This helps the reader identify the broad stages of your argument. However, the progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the first moves from knowledge to socialising and then to culture without showing how these points support your position about future purchases. Some linking phrases are mechanical or do not express the relationship accurately, such as “Apart from this” and “To justify it.” The final conclusion is very brief and does not bring the argument together. Use clearer topic sentences, explain how each example supports your central view, and use referencing and transitions that show the precise connection between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “printed,” “false information,” “fake accounts,” and “cultural books,” so the main subject is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations sound unnatural, which makes some points less precise. For example, “people can become socialise” does not convey the intended idea clearly, while “create many confusion” and “affect on their eyes” are awkward expressions. “Social media” is also not an exact substitute for all online reading, since the prompt concerns access to books and newspapers online. Aim for more precise topic vocabulary and learn common word combinations; the suggestions below offer alternatives that fit your ideas more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “books … which can provide proper knowledge” and a conditional idea about future online reading. The overall meaning is usually understandable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms recur. For instance, “discuss that why I disagree” has an incorrect clause structure, and “People posted some false claims” shifts into the past tense despite the surrounding present-tense discussion. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, as in “create many confusion around the people.” Work on forming indirect questions, maintaining consistent tense, and checking singular and plural forms. More accurate control of these patterns would make your argument easier to follow.
