IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often debated that the printed newspaper will become completely obsolete because free online content replace them. I strongly disagree with this view. While the digital media growing, but printed media will continue to have a signuficant place in future.

First of all, reading a physical book or printed newspaper offers an experience that digital screen cannot provide. Many people enjoy the feeling of turning the pages, find it easier on its eyes, and are less distracted to read online where notifications interrupt. For example, old people and many students offer study on physical because to concentrate thier studies. Furthermore, books are more reliable than the unverified news that are held online.

Secondly, printed books and newspaper have sentimental value. A book can be kept in personal library for decades, gifted to someone, and or collected to a valuable item. Newspaper and books are often archieved for historical records. These features cannot provided by online article. Everyone has a constant access to internet and online devices, especially in rural areas of developing countries like our country Pakistan. For them, newspaper and printed books are the mean source of information.

In conclusion, although online reading will continue to grow, but I believe that the newspaper and printed books will never completely disappear because of thier reading experience and cultural or sentimental value.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you “strongly disagree” that printed publications will disappear, and the conclusion restates this view. You give relevant reasons, including the reading experience, sentimental value, archiving, and limited internet access in rural areas. However, these points are not all developed equally. The example about older people and students is difficult to follow, and the claim that books are more reliable than online news needs explanation or qualification. The response also does not meet the stated minimum: it is 28 words short. Develop each main reason with a clearer explanation or specific example, and add enough relevant detail to meet the task requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting reasons, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “First of all,” “Furthermore,” and “Secondly” help readers follow the argument. However, some links are mechanical, and the second body paragraph shifts abruptly from sentimental value and archiving to internet access. The sentence beginning “Everyone has a constant access to internet” would connect more clearly if you explained how unequal access supports the continued need for print. There is also an unclear reference in “These features,” which could refer to several different points. Group related ideas more carefully and use transitions that show the relationship between them, rather than relying mainly on listing expressions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary, including “obsolete,” “sentimental value,” “historical records,” and “notifications,” which helps express the main ideas. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “personal library” and “unverified news.” However, spelling and word-choice errors sometimes make the message less precise: “signuficant,” “thier,” and “archieved” are inaccurate, while “the mean source of information” is an awkward expression. Some collocations, including “offer study on physical,” are difficult to understand. Aim for accurate, natural combinations and check spelling carefully. More precise wording for the example about students and for the claim about online news would make your argument clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “because free online content replace them” and a concession in the conclusion. The main argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “While the digital media growing, but…” has an incomplete clause and an unnecessary “but”; “a digital screen” needs an article; and “cannot provided” requires a passive form. There are also agreement and verb-form problems in “content replace them” and “books and newspaper have.” Work on complete clause structure, subject–verb agreement, articles, and consistent verb forms. Editing these patterns would improve control while preserving the range of ideas you are trying to express.
