IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is believed that in the near future, many people will prefer online reading instead of buying printed newspapers or books. They will be able to read it on the internet, and they will not have to buy it. I completely agree with the statement.

Nowadays, in the current situation where everything is one click away. Not only one but all the generation's people will be benefited by this. In the future, people will focus more on reading online newspapers and books instead of buying them. It will save both the time, efforts and the money. There will be no need for carrying the newspapers or the books.

Example: We can still be able to read the newspaper as well as books on the applications such as kindle and the app or website. So we will not be needed to carry the unnecessary weight.

Moreover, the applications comes with the advantages as well. Such as we can zoom the article or page and read it at our convenience. It even has the facilities such as read a loud. For elderly generation even if a person could not read it they can hear the news online easily.

In addition, not printing newspapers and books is also convenient from an environmental perspective as the paper for printing will not be used so, the less trees will be cut down. People will get more benefits by not cutting down the trees, such as the more oxygen will be provided.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that in the future people will prefer online reading instead of buying the printed newspaper or books.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction, where you say, “I completely agree,” and it is maintained in the conclusion. You address the main idea by discussing convenience, reduced carrying, accessibility features and environmental benefits. These are relevant reasons, and the Kindle example helps illustrate online reading. However, the response focuses mainly on why digital reading is preferable, rather than fully examining the claim that people will be able to read everything online without paying. The point about free access is not developed, and the prediction that nobody will buy printed material is not considered or qualified. Some supporting ideas, such as the benefits of oxygen from fewer trees being cut down, are also asserted rather than explained. Develop these points with clearer reasoning and examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for convenience and environmental effects, and a conclusion that restates your view. Linking phrases such as “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The sentence beginning “Nowadays, in the current situation where everything is one click away” is a fragment, and the example about applications is introduced abruptly with “Example:”. The paragraph on convenience also moves between time, effort, carrying books, zooming and audio without clearly grouping these points. Use complete topic sentences, connect each example directly to its main idea, and make references such as “it” and “they” more precise so readers can follow what they refer to.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “online newspapers,” “applications,” “environmental perspective,” and “convenience,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, particularly repeated references to “books,” “newspapers,” and “benefits.” Some word combinations are unnatural, such as “the applications comes with the advantages” and “the unnecessary weight.” There are also word-form and spelling issues, including “read a loud” and “efforts” in the phrase about saving time and effort. Aim for more precise collocations and vary your wording—for example, refer to “digital publications” or “printed materials” where appropriate. This would make the argument clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including “if a person could not read it they can hear the news online easily,” and most of the message remains understandable. However, some sentence structures are incomplete or faulty. “Nowadays, in the current situation where everything is one click away” is a dependent clause without a main clause, while “Such as we can zoom the article or page” is also a fragment. There are agreement and article errors in “the applications comes” and “the more oxygen,” and the conditional sentence shifts from “could” to “can.” Punctuation is sometimes missing, as in “In addition, not printing.” Practise building complete sentences and checking subject–verb agreement, articles and punctuation.
