IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the future nobody will purchase physical newspapers or books owing to the reason that they will be able to read whatever they prefer on internet without paying.

I firmly agree with the statement because there are many younger individuals who already started reading from their mobile phone or computers. On the top of that the Government is also increasing digitalization. Whereas there are some older citizens who still prefer to read newspaper or book offline.

There are several reasons behind my point of view. Firstly, I believe there are some intiatives which are already taken by the Government to promote digitalization, such as Government develping and funding some application developing companies in order to develop variouse apps. In addition to that the trees are used to produce papers. Government needs to save forests as a result they are already creating some alternative of papers. Although there are several apps like Divya bhaskar exists from where one can read and get news updates relatively faster than the newspaper and some times in hour of the insident, old aged person might not able to access it due to lack of knowledge. On the other hand younger generation already draw towards the digital news platforms as well as there are some websites who sell digital books. Subsequently, everything gets easier to access from the comfort of the home therefore everybody prefer it and recommend it to others as well.

Whereas there are some residents who developed a habit of reading newspapers of books physically. Alternatively, some have that belief that reading for too long from internet platform can damage their eye sight.

In conclusion, I believe that there are a lot of benefits of using internet platform for reading purposes as they are quicker, cheaper or sometimes free as well and comfortable as one can read it at home and at any time. On the other hand there are some who still like to read printed books and newspapers, eventually with the time and digitalization they might also start reading materials from internet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you firmly agree that online reading will largely replace printed materials, while acknowledging that some older people and habitual readers may continue to prefer print. You also give relevant reasons, including convenience, faster access to news, and environmental concerns about paper. This addresses the main question, but some points are not fully explained or are only loosely connected to the claim that online material will be free. For example, the discussion of government support for app developers needs a clearer link to why people will stop buying books and newspapers. Develop the counterargument about eye strain and print habits, then explain why it is less persuasive than your main reasons. This would make the argument more complete and better supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, supporting paragraphs, a counterpoint, and a conclusion. The reader can follow the broad progression from digital reading to reasons for continued print use. However, connections between ideas are sometimes mechanical or unclear. For instance, “On the top of that” and “Whereas” introduce points without always showing their precise relationship, and the long paragraph beginning “There are several reasons” combines government initiatives, forests, news apps, older readers, and younger readers. Divide this material into focused paragraphs and use clearer links between each claim and its explanation. Also ensure references such as “it” and “they” have unmistakable antecedents. These changes would make the progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “digitalization,” “digital news platforms,” “alternative,” and “access,” and your meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “In conclusion” and “from the comfort of the home.” However, inaccurate word choice, spelling, and collocation are noticeable and sometimes make the writing less natural. Examples include “intiatives,” “develping,” “variouse,” and “hour of the insident”; phrases such as “draw towards” and “some alternative of papers” are also awkward. Aim for precise, natural combinations such as “be attracted to digital platforms” and “alternatives to paper.” Proofreading spelling and choosing standard collocations would improve clarity and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “although,” and “as a result,” and the overall meaning can usually be understood. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries. For example, “there are some apps … exists” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “old aged person might not able” needs a plural or article and the verb “be.” The sentence beginning “Although there are several apps” also becomes difficult to manage because several ideas are joined together. Practise building complex sentences around one main clause, and check agreement and auxiliary verbs. More consistent punctuation would also help separate complete ideas.
