IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

I absolutely agree with this statement. Due to the emergence of digitalization, the world has evolved immensely. Having said that, everything is now available on the internet even books. I still remember the a time when a certain aged people would wake up to reading printed newspapers and sipping on their tea. This used to give them a fresh start of the day by reading news and staying updated, be it about politics or international relations or sports. On the other hand the book enthusiasts would always look for an oppurtunity to buy new books and smell the scent of the fresh papers or visit libraries scouring through books for hours, this would act like therapy. For book readers, books used to be the most priceless possession and the emotion attached in every page of the book is indispensable.

However, with the course of time, we got more accustomed to reading news and books on screens. We are flooded with resources now. This allows us to read whatever we want, what sort of content we desire to read and without having to go through so much hassle of looking for news or books with a good story, we can read reviews or comments regarding it. This saves us an ample amount of time .When a news is shared in social media, different people share different opinions which sparks a debate or argument. In a way, I find it amusing to read those comments as it allows me to analyze situations from different angles and build a perception my own. Not having to pay for books or newspapers encourages people to read more but the main downturn is that, online news consumes us rather than us consuming them. We are being shown the news which is decided by social media algorithms.

In all honesty, I used to enjoy reading printed newspapers and physical books more. Consuiming everything online confuses our brain and we deserve to have the autonomy for critical thinking, evaluating everything on our own along with painting narratives with our own imagination rather than being deluged and spoon fed by digital contents. Longer exposure to screen time also affects own sleep and critical thinking abilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the opening—“I absolutely agree”—and you discuss the shift from printed materials to online reading, including convenience, access to reviews, and concerns about algorithms and screen exposure. These are relevant ideas, and the contrast with the emotional value of physical books gives the response a personal perspective. However, the argument does not fully establish the claim in the prompt that people will be able to read everything online without paying. You mainly describe current advantages and drawbacks, rather than explaining why printed books and newspapers will no longer be bought in the future. Some points, such as the effect of screen time on sleep and critical thinking, are introduced but not developed or clearly linked to your position. Explain the future trend and support each main reason more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph about online reading, and a concluding personal view. Contrast markers such as “On the other hand” and “However” help signal changes in direction, and the ideas are generally understandable. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes loose: the discussion moves from free access to social-media comments, then algorithms, without clearly showing how each point supports the central argument. The conclusion also introduces screen exposure and critical thinking rather than drawing together the main reasons already developed. Some linking is mechanical or unclear, and the long first paragraph combines several ideas about newspapers, libraries, and the emotional value of books. Use clearer topic sentences and organise each paragraph around one main reason.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You show an adequate range and some flexibility, using expressions such as “emergence of digitalization,” “priceless possession,” “autonomy for critical thinking,” and “deluged and spoon fed.” These choices help convey both the convenience of online reading and your reservations about it. The response also includes some less common vocabulary, though several phrases are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “a certain aged people,” “an ample amount of time,” and “build a perception my own.” Spelling slips such as “oppurtunity” and “Consuiming” also reduce accuracy. To strengthen your vocabulary control, favour precise, natural collocations over elaborate wording, and check spelling and word forms. For example, “older people” and “form my own perspective” would express your intended meanings more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including time clauses and contrastive structures, as in “When a news is shared in social media…” and “Not having to pay for books or newspapers encourages people to read more.” Most of the meaning remains clear, and you attempt longer sentences to connect ideas. Some grammatical errors persist, however. Examples include “I still remember the a time,” “a certain aged people,” and “build a perception my own”; the final sentence also has an unclear construction in “affects own sleep.” Punctuation and sentence boundaries need attention, particularly in “time .When” and the long sentence beginning “On the other hand.” Review articles, agreement, possessives, and sentence punctuation, while keeping complex sentences controlled.
