IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the upcoming days, there will be no one who buy printed media or literary works, because they can easily access both things free of cost on internet. I strongly agree with this, with the technological advancement people will rely on internet rather than paying for print media or literary works and also it could be time consuming for buying books or newspapers physically.

First and Foremost, plays a crucial role that people will rely on e-books and news platforms that will be free of cost. The reason is there are lots of electronic books that are available online freely. All we have to do is just write the title of book. For example, if i have to search for the 1984 by George Orwell, it will be available to me and i will be able to read this book digitally. Similarly, when i want to know about the current affairs in different regions. For instance, the BBC and Euro news will be very helpful for me, as i can easily access to both platforms online.

Secondly, it could be time consuming method that i rely on buying newspaper and books physically. For example, if i want to buy the book named " One hundred years of Solitude ". I have to go to the market physically that wastes my time and also I don't even know that it will be available in the market or not. Similarly, for the newspaper, i have to wait for the newsprint daily, that also costs my time and my other daily routines will be disturbed due to this.

In conclusion, according to my perspective it would benefial for us to rely on internet for newspapers and traditional books that saves our money and time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you strongly agree that online access will replace printed newspapers and books. You give two relevant reasons—free digital access and the time involved in buying print—and support them with examples such as searching for *1984* and accessing BBC and Euronews. However, the response addresses the claim only partially because it largely assumes that all desired material will be available online for free, without considering limits such as paid subscriptions, copyright, or readers who prefer print. The second reason also focuses on inconvenience rather than explaining why this will lead to nobody buying printed material. Develop the argument by qualifying the claim and explaining how each example supports your prediction.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The sequence from online access to the inconvenience of physical purchases is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Similarly” and “Secondly” help indicate relationships between points. However, progression is somewhat mechanical, and some linking phrases are inaccurate or awkward: “First and Foremost, plays a crucial role” does not introduce a complete idea, while repeated “For example” and “Similarly” make the connections feel formulaic. References such as “both things” and “this” are also not always precise. Begin each body paragraph with a clear topic sentence, then connect each example explicitly to the main claim and vary your transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “technological advancement,” “current affairs,” “digitally,” and “physically,” and the reader can generally understand your meaning. However, the range is limited by repeated wording such as “free of cost,” “physically,” and “time,” and several expressions are not natural collocations, including “upcoming days,” “newsprint daily,” and “access to both platforms.” Some word choices also reduce precision: “literary works” is repeated where “books” would be clearer, and “plays a crucial role” is used without a suitable subject. Aim for more precise topic vocabulary and learn common combinations, such as “access news online,” “printed publications,” and “save time.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, using clauses with “because,” “if,” and “that,” but control is inconsistent. Errors occur in basic sentence structure and agreement: “there will be no one who buy” should be “no one who buys,” and “First and Foremost, plays a crucial role” is an incomplete sentence. Articles and prepositions are also unreliable, as in “on internet” and “access to both platforms” after “can easily.” Punctuation and capitalisation need attention, including the lowercase “i” and the comma splice in the opening paragraph. These errors sometimes make the reader pause, although the overall meaning remains understandable. Practise accurate sentence patterns before adding more complex clauses.
