IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowdays, people have started reading online books and newspaper as compared to reading physical textbooks or newspapers. From my perspective, I strongly agree with this notion because in future people will prefer to read digital e-books & newspaper due to accessibility of the books online, and it's convenient, & cost-effective for people.

The mean reason why people will buy online books & newspaper in future because e-books are easily accessible online, and more convenient for people. People are already using e-book platforms on their devices, and they can read anywhere in the world without carrying the physical book with them. Furthermore, introduction of work from home for individuals made an significant impact on people digital reading, and now people have a habit to read their work emails, and files rather than reading physical files or emails. As a result, people become more dependent on reading digital resources online as compared to offline. For example, according to Hearld Sun Newspaper survey, 45% people stated that reading online books is more convenient, and accessible.

Another imperative reason is that online reading is more cost-effective, and eco-friendly. Most of the offline newspaper organisation, and reading companies using printing factories to print books & newspaper which increase the production price of the physical books, and newspaper. Moreover, digital books save people hard money, and some of the physical book are heavly price for no reason while digital books are completely free that attracts more people in terms of reading books on online websites. In addition, manufacturing companies use woods from the forest for printing without considering the effect on nature whereas reading online book support to preserve the nature.

In conclusion, I believe that in future people will prefer reading books & newspaper online as it's easily accessible, cost-effective, and eco-friendly. Therefore, government should promote online reading in higher education, and employment industries to preserve our environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly agree that online reading will become more popular, and the conclusion restates this view. You give relevant reasons—accessibility, convenience, lower cost and environmental benefits—and support them with examples, including reading on devices and the survey statistic. This addresses the task well. However, the response focuses mainly on why people may choose digital reading, rather than fully examining the claim that nobody will buy printed books or newspapers and that online material will be free. The point about work emails and files is less directly connected, and the claim that digital books are completely free needs qualification. Develop these distinctions and acknowledge a possible limitation of printed media’s decline to make the argument more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. The progression from accessibility and convenience to cost and environmental impact is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Furthermore,” “Another… reason,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This gives the response a coherent arrangement. At times, however, linking is mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “and” to join several points. Some connections are also not fully clear: the discussion of work emails and files does not smoothly establish why people will stop buying printed books. Use more varied transitions and make the relationship between each example and the main claim explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary, including “accessible,” “cost-effective,” “eco-friendly,” “dependent,” and “preserve,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at topic-specific language such as “digital resources” and “printing factories.” However, noticeable spelling, word-form and collocation errors reduce precision: “Nowdays,” “mean reason,” “heavly price,” and “reading books on online websites” are examples. Some wording is also repetitive, especially “books & newspaper,” and informal symbols such as “&” are unsuitable in an academic essay. Aim for accurate, natural combinations such as “the main reason,” “heavily priced,” and “read books online,” and proofread spelling and singular/plural forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “whereas,” and “as a result,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. Some sentence patterns are controlled, such as “they can read anywhere in the world without carrying the physical book with them.” However, errors in agreement, articles, plurals and sentence construction recur. For example, “the mean reason why people will buy… because” lacks a complete grammatical structure, while “an significant impact” and “people become more dependent” show article and tense-control problems. There are also long sentences joined by commas and repeated conjunctions. Practise building complete clauses, checking subject–verb agreement and articles, and punctuating complex sentences more carefully.
