IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Although there are several trends favouring to make the world paperless but in my opinion, there will be still some individuals that will be purchasing books and newspapers.

No matter what, people who enjoy reading books or newspaper in physical form will keep purchasing them. It is really hard to convert them to become totally paperless and read their favorite books online. Because when someone likes to read, they also want to collect.

Giving a living example from my own experience, my grandfather still purchases and reads books and newspaper in physical form. Although he reads some small articles or headlines on his smartphone but when it comes to sipping his tea and reading a newspaper, nothing beats it. Him and I engaged in a conversation earlier about him to switch totally towards online newspaper and PDF books but he declined, moreover he insisted my to read a book in physical form for a month and then give him a review.

As I finished the book, I was amazed by the experience. Somehow my imaginations were limited when I used to read online books but when it comes to reading a book with physical touch, it coordinated better to my brain and unlocked the cage of my imagination. I highly favor the physical books over digital books now, although i read both but the taste of reading through paper is beyond digital one. Same goes for printed newspaper, I daily check headlines on my phone but when it comes to pass the time and know what is happening in the world with a deep indulgement, I read printed newspaper.

In conclusion, yes there will be alot of change in upcoming years. There will be lesser amount of paper available but there will be still some individuals like me, that will purchase a hard copy, read it and collect it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening: you disagree that printed books and newspapers will disappear, and you maintain this view in the conclusion. The examples of your grandfather’s reading habits and your own experience give the argument relevant personal support. You also acknowledge that online reading is common, for example by noting that you check headlines on your phone. However, the response focuses mainly on personal preference and does not fully examine the claim that people will be able to read everything online for free. The point about collecting books is introduced but not developed, and the conclusion largely repeats the opening. To strengthen the response, explain broader reasons printed media may remain in use and address the free-online-access aspect directly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a recognisable structure: an introduction, supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion, with ideas generally moving from your grandfather’s habits to your own experience. Linking phrases such as “No matter what,” “Giving a living example,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. The progression is understandable, but some connections feel mechanical or unclear. For instance, “Because when someone likes to read, they also want to collect” is a fragment and does not smoothly connect to the previous point. The long paragraph beginning “As I finished the book” combines several ideas that could be separated, while “Although” and “but” are sometimes used together awkwardly. Clearer paragraph focus and more precise links between claims and examples would make the cohesion more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss reading habits and print media, including “physical form,” “headlines,” “PDF books,” and “hard copy.” Some less common expressions, such as “unlocked the cage of my imagination,” show an attempt to express your personal response vividly. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “favouring to make the world paperless,” “deep indulgement,” and “lesser amount of paper.” Repetition of “physical,” “read,” and “book” also limits flexibility. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument, but more natural phrasing and greater precision would improve the overall effect. Aim to use topic vocabulary accurately rather than relying on unusual expressions that do not fit the context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “Although” and “when,” and most of your meaning remains clear. However, some errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation are noticeable. “Because when someone likes to read, they also want to collect” is an incomplete sentence, while “Him and I engaged” should use a subject pronoun. In “he insisted my to read,” the verb pattern is incorrect, and “I daily check” has an awkward adverb position. There are also inconsistent capitalisation and punctuation choices, such as lowercase “i” and the comma before “that” in the conclusion. Review sentence boundaries and common verb patterns, then proofread for agreement and punctuation.
