IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 4.0)

It is predicted that in future printed newspapers or books will not be purchased by anyone beacuse they can access digital books and whatever they want online for free of cost. I agree to a large extent with this view because although internet provide good faclities to the individuals, printed books offers better experience in terms of concentration.

Firstly, people can read wide range of books in online without storing many physical books which require some space to keep.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

You state a position—“I agree to a large extent”—and introduce a relevant contrast between the convenience of online reading and the concentration benefits of printed books. However, the response addresses the question only minimally: it gives one brief point about storing digital books and does not explain why free online access would lead people to stop buying printed books. The opposing point about printed books is also left undeveloped, and there is no conclusion. The response is substantially below the required 250 words, so there is not enough explanation or support to develop your position. To improve, discuss both the advantages of online reading and reasons people may continue buying print, then support each point with explanation or examples and state your final view clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic sequence: an opening paragraph gives your view, followed by a paragraph beginning “Firstly” that introduces one supporting point. This makes the general direction understandable. However, the second paragraph is only one sentence, and the essay has no developed progression, further supporting points, or conclusion. The contrast introduced by “although” is not carried through, so the relationship between online convenience and the benefits of print remains unclear. “Firstly” also suggests that more points will follow, but none do. Build a clear paragraph for each main idea, use linking expressions to show contrast and cause, and finish with a paragraph that summarises your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “printed newspapers,” “digital books,” “online,” and “concentration.” These choices make the subject clear, and “to a large extent” is an appropriate phrase for expressing your degree of agreement. However, the range is narrow because the response is very short, and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce accuracy: “free of cost” is unnatural in this context, “faclities” is misspelled, and “read wide range of books in online” is not idiomatic. Aim for precise topic language such as “free online content,” “digital access,” and “a wide range of books,” and check spelling and natural word combinations when proofreading.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt both a complex opening sentence and a contrast clause, as in “I agree to a large extent … although…,” which shows some variety beyond simple sentences. The main ideas are generally understandable, but grammatical control is uneven. For example, “internet provide” needs subject–verb agreement, while “printed books offers” also has an agreement error. The phrase “people can read wide range” is missing an article, and “in future” would normally be “in the future.” The short response offers few opportunities to demonstrate a wider range of structures, and these errors recur in basic patterns. Practise agreement, articles, and sentence construction, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb.
