IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In future, nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything online without paying. I completely agree with this statement to an extent because alot of people will still buy books and newspapers but the percentage will definately decrease.
I believe that reading from a book or newspaper has its own charm. It is much more convenient to read from a printed book as you can mark pages, highlight words and make a book collection. Many people around the world are particulary knee on reading and collecting books and people like them will still be found in future. Reading newspapers is very famous among older generation and I think that it will remain famous, since many senior citizens have eye problems due to which they might not be able to look at a screen for a long time, for example, some old eyes might water by watching a bright screen or it can possibly make them go blind and can become the cause for more eye deseases like mytopia. Moreover, book reading gives more emotion if read from a physical book. Some authors of books might also prefer people to read from a book rather then reading online due to this reason.
On the other hand, there are people around the globe who might not be able to afford printed books as they can be expensive. So, they prefer reading everything online for free. Moreover, in my opinion technological world will take over and the future generation will be dependent on it alot more then they are now. For example, as someone who is young myself and want to read books but do not have enough space to store them would prefer reading on my mobile phone. Printed books can require alot of space to store after reading which many people may not have now as well as in future.
In conclusion, I agree that that the amount of people who read printed books in the future will decline but i disagree that printed books and newspapers will completely be gone.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your position is clear: you reject the claim that printed publications will disappear, while agreeing that their readership will decline. You address both sides by discussing the appeal of physical books and newspapers, then explaining why cost, convenience and limited storage may encourage online reading. The examples about older readers and your own preference for a phone help extend the argument. This is a well-focused response with relevant support. To strengthen it further, develop the evidence and reasoning more carefully: the claim that screen use could make older people “go blind” is an over-generalisation, and the point about authors preferring print is asserted rather than explained. Clarifying how free online access will affect purchasing would also sharpen your response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your position, two body paragraphs present contrasting considerations, and the conclusion restates your view. Ideas generally progress logically, and signposts such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” make the direction easy to follow. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, with repeated use of “Moreover” and frequent reliance on “and” to connect points. Some sentences contain several ideas, making the links between them less clear—for example, the discussion of older readers moves from eye problems to screen brightness and then to possible diseases. Group related points more tightly, use a wider range of linking methods, and make references such as “this reason” more explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You communicate the main ideas using vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “printed,” “convenient,” “dependent,” and “decline.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “eye problems” and “store them.” However, the range is limited by repeated general wording such as “people,” “read,” and “future,” and several spelling or word-choice errors reduce precision: “alot,” “definately,” “particulary,” “knee on,” and “deseases.” Some phrases are also unnatural, including “reading newspapers is very famous” and “gives more emotion.” Aim for accurate collocations and more precise topic vocabulary, such as “popular among older generations” or “a more immersive reading experience.” Proofreading spelling would improve control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “since,” and “which,” and the overall meaning remains clear. Some sentence patterns are effective, such as the explanation that people may choose digital reading because printed books are expensive. However, errors in sentence structure and grammatical forms recur. For example, “as someone who is young myself and want to read” has a subject–verb agreement problem and an incomplete construction, while “the amount of people” uses an unsuitable noun form. There are also issues with articles, agreement and punctuation, as in “the older generation” and the long sentence beginning “Reading newspapers is very famous.” Practise building shorter, controlled sentences alongside complex ones, and check agreement and sentence boundaries.
