IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

ITS OFTEN ARGUEE THAT NOBODY WILL BUY PRINTED NEWSPAPER OR BOOKS BEACUSE THEY WILL ABLE TO READ EVREYTHING THEY WANT ONLINE WITHOUT PAYING.I PARTLY AGREE WITH THIS OPINION TO A CERTAIN EXTENT.

ONE OF MORE IMPORTANT REASON WHY I AGREE WITH THIS VIEW IS THAT, READING BOOK IN ONLINE ARE MORE EASIER THAN BUYING PRINTED NEWSPAPER AND BOOKS.THHIS IS BEACUSE PEOPLE CAN USE THEIR SMARTPHONES,TABLETS AND LAPTOP FROM ANYWHERE.FOR EXAMPLE A STUDENT CAN READ ANY BOOKS AND NEWS PAPER BY USING LAPTOP AND SMART PHONES,WICH CLEARLY ILLUSTARTE THE POINT

HOWEVER,IT ALSO TRUE THAT SOME PEOPLE ENJOY PRINTED BOOKS AND NEWS PAPER TO READ,BEACUSE THEY FEEL COMFORTABLE,SOME PEOPLE BELIVE THAT READING RRINTED NEWS PAPER AND BOOK FOR ITS FEEL COMFORTABLE THAN ONLINE READING,READIG NEWS PAPER IN SMARTPHONE FOR LONGTIME MAY HAVE A BAD HEADCHE.ALTGOUGH THIS ARGUEE ALSO VALID TO SOME EXTENT,I STILL BELIVE THAT PRINTED NEWS PAPER AND BOOK NEVER DISAPOINTED IF NEWS PAPER AND BOOKS ARE FREE TO READ IN ONLIE.

IN CONLUSION WHILE THERE ARGUEMENTS ON BOTH SIDES,I BELIVE THAT FREE READING NEWS PAPER AND BOOKS IN ONLINE CAN DAMAGE THE SELL OF PRINTED NEWS PAPER.OVERALL,THIS VIEW IS MORE REASONABLE WHEN CONSIDIRNG ITS LONG-TERM IMPACT ON SOCITY AND COUNTRY

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a clear, partly agreeing position in the introduction and return to it in the conclusion. The response also presents two relevant considerations: digital reading is convenient on phones and computers, while some readers prefer the comfort of printed material. However, the task is only partially addressed because these points are briefly stated rather than explained or supported in depth. The example of a student using devices illustrates access, but does not show why this means printed publications will no longer be bought. Your discussion of free online reading and its effect on print sales is also unclear. The response is 50 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to develop your argument. Explain the extent of your agreement consistently and support each main reason with a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting online reading, a contrasting paragraph about print, and a conclusion. The use of “However” and “In conclusion” helps signal the main stages of the argument. At times, though, progression within paragraphs is difficult to follow because several ideas are joined together without clear relationships. For example, the point about printed reading feeling comfortable runs into the claim about headaches from smartphone reading, then shifts to whether free online books disappoint readers. The conclusion introduces damage to print sales without clearly linking it to the earlier reasoning. Use one main idea per paragraph, connect each explanation directly to its claim, and make references such as “this view” and “this argument” more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “printed,” “smartphones,” “comfortable,” and “long-term impact,” so the reader can identify the subject of your argument. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repeated, especially “newspaper and books” and “online.” Frequent spelling errors, such as “arguee,” “evreything,” “disapointed,” and “society,” make the writing harder to read. Some word combinations are also unnatural, including “reading book in online” and “damage the sell of printed newspaper.” Aim to learn topic-specific collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise expressions for convenience, reader preference, and the effect on sales would help you communicate your ideas more clearly and flexibly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, including a concession beginning “Although this argument…” and a contrast introduced by “However.” This shows an effort to connect ideas using more than basic sentence patterns. However, the range remains limited, and errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms occur frequently enough to make some points difficult to understand. For example, “people can use their smartphones, tablets and laptop from anywhere” has problems with number and sentence form, while “it also true” is missing a verb. The sentence beginning “some people believe” also joins several claims without clear punctuation or structure. Practise accurate subject–verb patterns, articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries, then proofread each sentence for a complete and clear grammatical structure.
