IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The modern technology has made many changes in the literacy. In the primitive times, people used to get all the global information from the newspapers or from the books. However, the world is changed into a global village. In addition to this, in the upcoming times, people will abandon the use of books. The reason is that they will be able to get all the information they wanted from the internet without any cost. I don't see eye to eye with this statement.

The first and foremost thing is that it will affect the country's economy. If the people don't buy the printed books or newspaper then the paper industry has to face many difficulties. This will lead to crucial problem. If the people don't buy the books, the shops will face the reduction of the customers. In addition to this, the paper industry can't be able to publish futher articles or newspapers. Consequently, they will have to shutdown the industries.

If these industries close, government will have to hardship in the international competition.

On the other hand, it has many flaws for the human mind. If the individuals read all articles or books from the online, continuous screening will mitigat the human retention power. Their cognitive abilities will assuage and they have to face the academic challenges. Moreover, it also destroy the mental peace of a person and they have to suffer the problems like anxiety, depression and pshycosis. People only see the financial advantages of reading online and they ignore the drawbacks of them. That affect their normal brain functions.

In conclusion, people will have to choose the use of internet wisely. The process of reading books will assist them to develop their personality and expand their retention. They should also think about the economic development of country that make their country proud internationally.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you disagree that printed books and newspapers will disappear, and the conclusion reinforces this view. You address the topic with two relevant lines of reasoning: possible economic effects on the paper and publishing industries, and potential effects of prolonged screen reading on readers. These points support your response, but they are not developed equally or precisely. For example, the claim that industry closures would harm a country’s international competition is asserted without explaining the connection, while the effects on concentration and mental health would benefit from clearer support. The response also focuses mainly on disadvantages of online reading rather than directly examining whether free online access will make printed material unnecessary. Develop that comparison and explain why print will continue to be valued.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting reasons, and a conclusion. Paragraphing helps distinguish the economic argument from the effects on readers, and signposts such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” make the stages visible. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, with repeated “If” and “In addition to this” constructions. Some links between claims are also unclear: the move from industry closures to the government’s difficulty in international competition needs an explanation, and “That affect their normal brain functions” has an unclear reference. Use fewer repeated connectors, make each paragraph develop one central claim step by step, and ensure pronouns clearly refer to the intended idea.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “global village,” “cognitive abilities,” “retention power,” and “international competition.” This shows an effort to express ideas beyond basic vocabulary. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the argument less clear: “mitigat the human retention power,” “their cognitive abilities will assuage,” and “will have to hardship” do not convey the intended meanings naturally. There are also spelling errors such as “futher,” “pshycosis,” and “mitigat.” Choose vocabulary for accuracy rather than complexity, check spelling carefully, and learn common combinations such as “reduce memory retention” and “pose a challenge.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple statements and complex sentences, particularly conditional forms such as “If the people don’t buy the printed books… then the paper industry has to face many difficulties.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main ideas are generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, especially with agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “it also destroy” should have a verb agreeing with “it,” while “the world is changed into a global village” uses an awkward passive construction. “The shops will face the reduction of the customers” also shows difficulty forming a natural noun phrase. Review subject–verb agreement and article use, and edit each sentence for a clear subject and verb while retaining your complex sentence attempts.
