IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many individuals believe that , in the future , the significance of printed newspapers or books will ne lessened , as people are able to read everything they want online free of cost . I , believe that the idea is flawed due to a combination of factors such as internet dependency and high distraction levels.
Internet is a major part of reading newspapers or books online , as these sites cannot be opened if there is a lack or poor internet service . Poor internet can cause a variety of problems like sites crashing , sites getting stuck and more . For example , an elderly couple reading a newspaper online in an internet café when the internet cuts out . This can result in them forgetting where they stopped and can also ruin their mood of reading the newspaper .
High distraction levels is another major reason as to why online reading of books and newspapers are flawed . Plenty are the means of getting distracted . For example , for a man reading an online book , notification from certain apps or audio/video calls can prove to be extremely distracting . This can contribute to a lot of factors like loss of rhythm while reading the book , loss of interest as well as loss of emotional attachment with the book .
Overall , I , believe that online newspapers and books should never be of more significance than physical newspapers or books , As there are many demands like proper internet supply and lesser distraction oppurtunities
Amen .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you disagree that online access will make printed books and newspapers disappear, and you give two relevant reasons—dependence on internet access and online distractions. The examples of a connection cutting out and notifications interrupting reading help illustrate these points. However, the discussion focuses mainly on disadvantages of online reading and does not fully explain why these mean people will continue buying printed material; for instance, you could compare the reliability, convenience, or reading experience of print with online formats. The opening also paraphrases the claim but could state your degree of disagreement more directly. Developing the link between each reason and the future of printed publications would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a concluding statement. This makes the overall line of argument easy to follow. The transitions “another major reason” and “Overall” signal the progression, and examples are placed within the relevant paragraphs. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear: “This can contribute to a lot of factors” does not clearly show how the listed effects follow from distraction, and the conclusion largely repeats the opening rather than drawing the argument together. The example about the elderly couple is also presented as a sentence fragment, which interrupts the flow. Use clearer links between claims and consequences, and make the conclusion synthesise the reasons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including relevant terms such as “internet dependency,” “distraction levels,” “notification,” and “emotional attachment.” There are also attempts at less common phrasing, such as “loss of rhythm,” although some expressions are not natural or precise in context. For example, “lessened” and “of more significance” are awkward ways to describe the future use of print, while “lesser distraction opportunities” is unclear. Spelling errors such as “ne” and “oppurtunities,” along with repeated use of “loss,” reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and precise wording, such as “decline in demand,” “interruptions,” and “maintain concentration,” and proofread carefully for spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause beginning “as” and a conditional structure in “if there is a lack or poor internet service.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are noticeable. The example beginning “For example, an elderly couple…” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence, and “High distraction levels is” has a subject–verb agreement error. The final sentence also has an unclear structure: “there are many demands like proper internet supply and lesser distraction opportunities.” Commas are frequently separated from the preceding word, and capitalisation is inconsistent, including “As” after a comma. Practise complete sentence construction, agreement, and consistent punctuation while retaining your attempts at complex forms.
