IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

People are going to stop purchasing printed newspapers and books because of digitalization which they'll be able to access free of cost. I agree with this statement to some extent. This essay will further discuss the reasons behind this stand.

The primary reason why people will not be able to access their favourite newspapers or books online is because of paywall. The newspaper authorities and book publishers generally leave a preview online for free to attract the buyers' attention. However, most of them have integrated payment gateways to their websites and applications so that anyone who is interested in getting the full aritcle or copy has to pay first to get access to it. Another, contributing factor is going to be nostalgia. Individuals who are already used to reading hard copies of books and newspapers might never switch to digital versions of them.

Despite publishers and newspapers hiding their content behind a paywall, there are a lot of free contents available online. This amount of open-source and free resources is going to increase over time. As a result, people are going to be able to access and read some of the newspapers and books online without paying. However, the owners of the contents are going to decide whether a content will be free of cost or not. Hence, people can't decide what they are getting for free.

In conclusion, people will be have access to some newspapers and books for free online. But, it can't be guranteed that their favourite or preferred articles are going to be free of cost. Nostalgia too will play a significant role against complete digitalization. These are the reasons why I don't completely agree with the statement.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you partly disagree because online access is not always free and some readers may prefer print. The discussion of paywalls is relevant and supported with an explanation of previews and paid access, while the conclusion returns to your main view. However, the response does not fully explore the statement’s prediction that nobody will buy printed material: nostalgia is mentioned but not developed with a concrete explanation, and the point about free online resources is broad. Also, the opening says people will stop purchasing, which conflicts with your later partial disagreement. Make your position consistent from the introduction onward and develop each reason with a specific example or consequence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting contrasting considerations, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “However,” “As a result,” and “Hence” help show relationships between ideas. The progression is generally understandable, but some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “The primary reason why people will not be able to access their favourite newspapers or books online is because of paywall” appears to argue against access, although the paragraph explains that access is possible after payment. “Another, contributing factor” also interrupts the flow with unnecessary punctuation. Improve cohesion by making each paragraph’s main point explicit and using clearer references when moving between paid and free content.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “paywall,” “payment gateways,” “open-source,” “nostalgia,” and “digitalization.” These choices show some flexibility and help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning remains clear despite occasional awkward wording. Some collocations and word forms are not natural, such as “free contents,” “a content,” and “getting the full aritcle or copy”; spelling errors such as “aritcle” and “guranteed” also reduce accuracy. The phrase “free of cost” is repeated several times. To strengthen your vocabulary, use more precise, natural combinations and vary repeated expressions—for example, “available at no charge” or “subscription-based access.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “because of paywall” and “so that anyone who is interested… has to pay.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In the conclusion, “people will be have access” combines incompatible verb forms; write “people will have access.” The opening’s “because of digitalization which they’ll be able to access” has an unclear clause connection, and “Another, contributing factor” has incorrect punctuation. There are also article and number issues in phrases such as “because of paywall” and “a content.” Review verb patterns, articles, and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use complex structures.
