IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that printed books and newspapers will eventually become obselete as the large number of digital alternatives provides people access to whatever they want to read without any cost. Most people disagree with the claim that traditional printed books and newspaper will disappear but I firmly agree that digital media will completely overtake traditional formats.
On one hand, there are several causes that printed books and newspapers will not fade away as it provides information to those who don't have access to digital media. In addition, mostly authentic and verified information can be accessed after paying a subscription fee. For instance, New York Times and other major platforms have a fee that you have to pay monthly. Furthermore, they believe that reading through digital screens can cause eye and serious health problems.
On the other hand, I have many reasons to believe that this claim is true. First and foremost, digital media provides as an easy access as we can read anything whenever we want. We don't have to get spare time to read a newspaper. For instance, a person can read news in his office when he gets free time. Secondly, the new generation is more attached to digital media and they free prefer things on screens rather than in printed form. Lastly, printed media is also causing harm to environment as paper is made from trees and for that reason we have to cut down the trees.
To sum up, I firmly believe that printed newspapers and books will be extinct in near future as we can get everything to read on digital platforms mostly with a cost.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you agree that digital media will overtake print, and you address both sides before reaching a conclusion. The counterargument includes relevant points about access for people without digital media and concerns about screen-related health effects. However, these points are not fully explained, and the claim that paid subscriptions provide “authentic and verified information” does not clearly show why print itself will survive. Your supporting reasons—convenience, younger readers’ preferences, and environmental impact—are relevant, but the examples and explanations are brief. Develop each main point with a clearer link to whether printed books and newspapers will actually disappear, and qualify broad claims such as “completely overtake” to make the argument more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To sum up” helps readers follow the argument. Within paragraphs, however, ideas sometimes feel listed rather than developed, particularly the three reasons in the second body paragraph. Some connections are also unclear: the subscription example concerns paid digital news, but its relationship to the survival of printed media is not made explicit. The phrase “as it provides information” has an unclear reference, and “they believe” does not identify who holds that view. Use clearer referencing and add linking explanations between each reason and your central position.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “digital alternatives,” “subscription fee,” “digital platforms,” and “environment.” These choices make the subject clear, and phrases such as “firmly agree” communicate your stance directly. There are some spelling and word-choice inaccuracies, including “obselete,” “free prefer,” and “with a cost,” which make parts of the response less natural. Some expressions are also imprecise or awkward, such as “provides as an easy access” and “printed media is also causing harm to environment.” Aim for more accurate collocations and a few precise terms for the changes you describe, such as “decline,” “accessibility,” or “environmental impact.” Proofreading spelling and checking phrases in context would improve control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “as we can read anything whenever we want” and a relative clause in “a person can read news in his office when he gets free time.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “books and newspaper will disappear” has a plural agreement issue, while “as it provides” does not agree clearly with the plural subject. The construction “provides as an easy access” is also grammatically awkward, and “we have to cut down the trees” uses an unnecessary article in this general statement. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence patterns with “provide access”; then check punctuation and agreement during proofreading.
