IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often claimed that newspapers or books will not be purchased by individuals because they will have online access to read all the things without spending money. I completely disagree with this statement because printed material has a sentimental value and usage of devices will still be a limitation for many people.

Books and newspapers have an emotional connection with people. Our elders read newspaper daily in the morning before doing any task. If they don't read newspaper, they feel their day is boring. For example, individuals touch the pages of books and newspapers during reading which builds a deep connection with them. That's why, they will not ignore this feeling even when everything will be available online. They can read online but cannot get the happy feelings from the screen.

Elderly people still struggle in using the digital devices. They even do not know how to find a book from an online website. In Pakistan, for instance, older individuals have not enough educational background for the internet and mobile phones. They even ask somebody to find and dial the contact numbers. Admittedly, young generation know how to use digital appliancations and wanted free books for read. However, some people including youngsters still prefer to read on printed books despite having cost.

In conclusion, I disagree with this view that nobody will buy printed material in the future because still some people prefer to read by touching the books pages and have less knowledge how to use these modern devices for reading.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction—“I completely disagree”—and remains consistent in the conclusion. You address the prediction that printed material will disappear by giving two relevant reasons: readers’ emotional attachment to physical pages and some older people’s difficulty using digital devices. The examples about morning newspaper routines and older people needing help with phones make the response relevant. However, the first reason is developed more fully than the second, and the discussion does not directly examine the claim that online reading will be free. The point about young people preferring printed books is useful but brief. To strengthen the response, explain why these preferences and access barriers will continue to lead people to purchase books and newspapers, rather than simply read them.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. The progression from emotional attachment to difficulties with technology is easy to follow, and examples generally appear alongside the ideas they support. Linking phrases such as “For example,” “Admittedly,” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships between points. At times, however, connections are somewhat mechanical, and some references are not fully clear—for instance, “They can read online” could specify who “they” refers to. The second body paragraph also shifts from older people to young people without fully connecting the contrast. Use clearer transitions and develop the relationship between these groups to make the progression more flexible and cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main argument, including topic-related terms such as “sentimental value,” “digital devices,” and “printed material.” There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “emotional connection” and “educational background.” However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, including “happy feelings from the screen,” “find a book from an online website,” and “have not enough educational background for the internet.” The spelling error “appliancations” and the phrase “books pages” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your position, but they limit precision and naturalness. Practise common collocations for reading, technology, and access, and check spelling and word forms during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “because they will have online access” and a concession introduced by “Admittedly.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, and the overall argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, agreement, verb forms, and plural nouns. For example, “read newspaper daily” needs an article or plural form, “young generation know” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “wanted free books for read” has errors in tense and infinitive structure. The final sentence, “touching the books pages,” also needs a possessive form. To improve, check noun phrases and ensure verbs agree with their subjects, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
