IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is often argued that, in the upcoming days noone will purchase traditional paper or printed books because nowadays technology has become more advanced so people may able to read everything on online platform without paying. While this trend may bring some benefits, I largely disagree with this statement because older people prefer reading hand write newspaper and people want to protect their eyes from artificial light.
One major disadvantage of this development is that older peole may prefer reading traditional newspaper. Although older citizen may prefer reading printed papers or books rather than online platforms. This is mainly because they feel more comfortable to read everything on traditional method. In fact, they can not imagine without the printed books or newspapers. For example, majority of the old people enjoy reading newspaper in early in the morning with tea. As a result, printed newspaper will continue in the future for the user.
Another significant factor to consider is that majority of the people want to protect their eyes from reduction of screen. In other words, at the present people may spend too much time on using smartphone. If people want to reduce using smartphone and they may read everything in printed newspaper. Additionally, reading on screen for long period may cause for user because artificial power may harmful for their bodies especially eyesight. A good example can be seen this is student may study long time so they buy printed books instead reading digital screen. As a result, people will continuously purchase hand write books or paper. Therefore, people may find more comfortable on traditional method.
In conclusion, Although reading on digital screen may help people to save time and money, however I believe that this is a negative development overall. This is mainly because elderly people may follow printed newspaper or books and people want to protect their eyesight.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you largely disagree that printed materials will disappear, and both body paragraphs give relevant reasons—older readers’ preferences and concerns about screen use. The examples of reading a newspaper with tea and students choosing printed books help connect these reasons to the topic. This addresses the main question, but some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the claim that older people “cannot imagine without” printed materials needs clearer reasoning, and the discussion of eyesight does not establish how widespread or decisive this concern is. The conclusion also calls the trend a “negative development,” although the task asks how far you agree or disagree. Keep the focus on your degree of agreement and develop the supporting explanations more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. Topic sentences such as “One major disadvantage” and “Another significant factor” make the paragraph purposes clear, while examples generally follow the relevant claims. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, with repeated links such as “As a result,” “Additionally,” and “Therefore.” Some connections are also unclear: “If people want to reduce using smartphone and they may read…” does not express the intended relationship cleanly, and the conclusion’s “Although … however” creates an awkward contrast. Improve cohesion by making each sentence’s relationship to the previous one explicit and varying linking methods; also avoid repeating the same point about traditional reading in several forms.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “traditional newspaper,” “online platform,” “artificial light,” and “protect their eyes.” There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “printed materials” and “digital screen.” However, the range is limited and several inaccurate or unnatural choices make the writing less clear. Examples include “hand write newspaper,” “reduction of screen,” “artificial power,” and “traditional method”; these do not express the intended meanings naturally. Spelling and word-form errors such as “noone” and “peole” are also noticeable. Build a more precise vocabulary for print and digital media, and check collocations and word forms so that your ideas sound natural rather than translated.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “Although older citizen may prefer…” and a conditional structure beginning “If people want…”. Meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical control are noticeable. For example, “people may able to read” needs an auxiliary, while “they can not imagine without the printed books” lacks a clear object or construction. The sentence beginning “If people want to reduce using smartphone and they may read…” combines clauses incorrectly, and “reading on screen for long period may cause for user” is incomplete. There are also issues with articles, plurals, and agreement, as in “older citizen” and “majority of the people want.” Practise accurate clause patterns and review articles and singular/plural forms.
