IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In future nobody will like to buy newspapers because everything is available online to read without any payment but, in my opinion it is not very much interesting to read online as compared to read from newspapers. Because, reading books is very interseting and it does not effect eyesight as much as digital devices do. But, it is convenient to read online because we can read news from our mobiles where ever we are. Both are convenient in some aspects but it also depends on people interests and in which source of news they are more comfortable.but, i would prefer newspapers over online because, it seems more interesting to me. People should also buy and read newspapers and should give their opinions. these are also convenient for old people who do not know how to use mobile phones.Books are also very important because from our child hood to till FSc we have read from books.Almost, Gen z generation will take both resourses of world wise news. But may be the next generation would prefer online updates than printed newspapers because, there environment would be like alll the things will be occurring online. So, I do not agree to get updates about happening things in world online. We should also read novels, magazines and articles to get variety of information.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a recognisable opinion, especially when you say, “I do not agree,” and you mention relevant considerations such as convenience, eyesight, older readers, and future generations. However, the position is not consistently clear: you first compare newspapers with online reading, then discuss books, and later predict that younger generations may choose online updates without explaining how this supports your view. Several points are asserted rather than developed, and the response does not fully address the claim that online material will be free. The response is also 32 words below the required minimum, limiting the space available to explain and support your ideas. Develop a clear argument about both printed books and newspapers, with specific reasons and examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The response includes several relevant ideas, and phrases such as “But” and “because” show attempts to connect them. However, the ideas are presented as one continuous block rather than organised into paragraphs, so the reader has difficulty following the progression from personal preference to older readers, books, and future generations. Linking words are often repeated or used awkwardly, as in “But, in my opinion” and “but, i would prefer.” Some connections are unclear, particularly the move from the importance of books to the prediction about Gen Z. Use separate paragraphs for your position, supporting reasons, and conclusion. Arrange each paragraph around one main point and use clear references to connect examples to that point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate basic ideas, including “convenient,” “digital devices,” “opinions,” and “variety of information.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “happening things in world,” “both resourses of world wise news,” and “not very much interesting.” Spelling errors, including “interseting,” “resourses,” and “child hood,” are noticeable and reduce the overall accuracy of the vocabulary. Some repetition of “read,” “online,” and “newspapers” also makes the response less varied. Aim to learn natural collocations for this topic and check spelling carefully; more precise phrases would help you express comparisons and predictions clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to combine ideas using clauses with “because” and “as,” and you use some simple sentences that communicate your meaning. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and complex attempts are often faulty. For example, “Because, reading books is very interseting” is a fragment, while “it also depends on people interests” has an incorrect possessive form. There are also recurring problems with sentence boundaries and punctuation: several ideas run together, and commas are placed inconsistently. Capitalisation is also unreliable, as in “i.” Practise writing complete sentences with one main idea each, checking subject–verb relationships, possessives, articles, and punctuation before combining clauses.
