IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the coming years, nobody will purchase printed newspapers or books due to the easy avaliablity of information on internet without any charges .I strongly agree with this view because reading online is more convenient and online information updates more quickly.

To begin with , the easy avaliablity of information on internet has made online reading more convenient for people . Individuals can access books and newspapers anytime as they can read on their phones, laptops and tablets .As a result , they don't need to carry any printed material such as books , newspaper, magazines with them . for instance students can read topics online while travelling rather than carrying the book. Therefore, it becomes much more easier for them to travel without carrying heavy textbooks.

The another significant reason is that online information updates on daily basis. Online newspapers can be updated quickly whenever new information becomes available. consequently, viewers can access the new information and development without waiting for next day printed newspaper. A cite of example is that a person can read breaking news on their smartphones as soon as event occurs , whereas printed newspapers show two -three days old news .Thus, it becomes useless if the viewer recives news after the event passed.

In conclusion, I largely agree with the view of replacing printed newspapers and books with online information because it is more convenient and add changes immediately .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly agree, and the conclusion restates this view. You also give two relevant reasons—convenience and faster updates—and support them with examples about students reading while travelling and people accessing breaking news. However, the response does not fully develop the claim that people will read everything online without paying; it focuses mainly on convenience and speed, without explaining free access or considering why some people may continue buying print. The comparison with printed news being “two-three days old” is also too broad. The response is 15 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to develop your ideas. Explain each reason more fully and connect it directly to the task’s prediction.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. The progression from convenience to rapid updates is easy to follow, and examples generally appear alongside the points they support. You use linking expressions such as “To begin with,” “As a result,” and “In conclusion.” However, some transitions feel mechanical or are not punctuated clearly, as in “Therefore, it becomes…” and “Thus, it becomes useless…”. The second body paragraph also moves quickly from updates to the broad claim that delayed news is useless, without fully explaining the connection. Use fewer formulaic connectors, make the relationship between each example and its main point explicit, and check sentence boundaries and spacing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “printed material,” “access,” “updated,” and “breaking news.” There are also attempts to use more formal expressions, such as “significant reason” and “development.” However, several spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “avaliablity,” “recives,” and “A cite of example.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise: “easy availability of information on internet,” “add changes immediately,” and “the event passed.” Repetition of “online information,” “convenient,” and “new information” limits the range. Build accuracy with common collocations and vary repeated terms—for example, use “online content,” “digital access,” or “real-time updates” where appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a reason clause in “because reading online is more convenient” and a time clause in “whenever new information becomes available.” Most of your meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include missing or incorrect articles and prepositions in “on internet,” “the another significant reason,” and “waiting for next day printed newspaper.” There are also problems with sentence boundaries and punctuation, such as the run-together “Therefore, it becomes…” after “book,” and inconsistent spacing around commas and full stops. The final sentence, “it is more convenient and add changes immediately,” has a faulty verb structure. Practise article use, parallel verb forms, and accurate sentence punctuation while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
