IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

There will be no longer use of newpapers and books in upcoming era becasue people will use digital resources to read all information without spending any money. In my opinion, I firmly agree with this statement because due to ease of access of knowledge will reduce the usability of news papers and books but not eliminate them.

Firstly, people may found it more convenient to use the digital applications to get the latest updates of news because now they don't feel the need to wait for newspaper to be delivered at their home and there are many social platforms available like youtube, facebook where they can check details of whats happening in their sorroundings.People are now able to advertise their products using these platforms. In past people were using newspaper to check job openings in their area but now there are many online websites like Linkedin where can open your account for free of cost and individuals can view bundles of jobs based on their expertise at larger scale. Digital technology is still in a process of upgrading and it might successful to eliminate the use of news paper completely in near by future.

Secondly, books were used to be expensive and individual need to spend so much money to purchase them but now large number of books in all genres are available for free which gave readers more access to read more number of books. However, it may reduce the demand of printed books but not elimate them entirely because some people feel having better experience to read by paper in order to engage and stay connected to the book because they feel preasure on their eyes while reading from screen.

In Conclusion, the use of printed newspaper and books may effected but it will not get elimnated entirely due to drawbacks of using digital technology for long period of time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you agree that online access will reduce the use of printed materials, while arguing that it will not eliminate them. You address both newspapers and books, and the examples of online news, job listings and free digital books are relevant. However, the response does not fully resolve the task’s central claim that people will be able to read everything online without paying. You mainly discuss convenience and availability, rather than examining whether all content will be free. The argument that print will remain because screens cause eye strain is relevant but brief, and the newspaper paragraph ends by suggesting print may disappear, which conflicts somewhat with your overall position. Develop these points and explain the extent of your agreement more consistently.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. “Firstly,” “Secondly” and “In Conclusion” make the main stages easy to follow, and the examples generally sit under the relevant topic. However, some paragraphs contain several ideas without enough separation or explanation. The first body paragraph moves from news updates to advertising and then job listings, so its central argument becomes less focused. The transition from saying digital technology may eliminate newspapers to concluding that print will not disappear also weakens the progression. Some linking is mechanical, and the long first paragraph has limited internal signposting. Group related examples more tightly and use clearer transitions to show how each supports your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “digital resources,” “latest updates,” “expertise,” “genres” and “drawbacks.” These choices help communicate your main ideas, and you attempt some topic-specific expressions. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, as in “newpapers,” “sorroundings,” “elimate” and “preasure.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise: “bundles of jobs,” “at larger scale” and “better experience to read by paper” do not express the intended meaning smoothly. Repetition of “use,” “people” and “books” also limits flexibility. Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling carefully; more precise phrasing will make your argument easier to understand without changing its ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because” and “while,” and the overall meaning is usually understandable. However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors in verb forms, articles, agreement and sentence construction sometimes make the reader pause. For example, “people may found it” needs a correct verb form, while “where can open your account” lacks a clear subject. In “books were used to be expensive,” the verb pattern is incorrect, and “it might successful” is missing a verb form. There are also run-on sentences, particularly in the first body paragraph, where ideas need clearer punctuation. Practise building accurate clauses first, then combine them, and proofread for complete subjects and verbs.
