IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Books are a thing of past. Readers around the world would certainly abandon printed books and prefer online book reading in the coming era. I strongly agree with this view due to several compelling reasons.

Online bookstores are growing rapidly in the recent years where people can simply download their prefered book and read without an effort. Furthermore, subscription to these online reading platforms are much cheaper infact, most of the times they are even free of cost. As a result, saving money compels the readers to opt free online books. With the advent of social media influence, newspapers are becoming extint. People are getting most of the news from different social media handles within no time, even when the incident or the event is happening live.

Portability is another factor contributing to the popularity of online reading. Smartphones and all other types of electronic gadgets which can be taken anywhere, leads to a highly portable reading sessions for people absorbed into reading habit. Moreover, as of late, individuals largely prefer easily accessible, time saving and low cost items. With free online reading and being informed of their environment, it can certainly save their time and money altogether. For instance, visiting a bookstore, finding the required book, waiting in que for payment, all involves time and money consumption.

In conclusion, people will indeed prefer reading onilne rather than buying books in the near future. This is largely because online reading aid individuals to save both time spent on searching for books in book stores and money spent to purchase them. Electronic gadgets being portable also compel readers to opt for online reading whenever they want.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction (“I strongly agree”) and remains consistent in the conclusion. You give relevant reasons—lower costs, rapid access to news, and portability—and the bookstore example helps illustrate the time involved in buying a printed book. This covers the main direction of the prompt, but the discussion is not equally developed across its claims. In particular, the statement that people can read everything online without paying is treated as though online books are generally free, although you also mention paid subscriptions; this important qualification needs clearer consideration. The argument about newspapers relies mainly on social media and would benefit from explaining why this means printed newspapers will disappear. More precise development and acknowledgement of limitations would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates the position. The ideas generally progress from cost and news access to portability, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” and “For instance” help guide the reader. However, some connections are mechanical or not fully clear. The first body paragraph moves from online bookstores to social media news without explaining the relationship between these examples, while “With free online reading and being informed of their environment” is an awkward transition into the time-and-money claim. The conclusion also repeats earlier points rather than drawing them together. Use clearer links between each claim and its supporting explanation, and vary referencing to reduce repetition of “online reading” and “people.”

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “subscription,” “portability,” “advent,” and “accessible,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “several compelling reasons.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “opt free online books” should be “opt for free online books,” and “time and money consumption” is less natural than “time and money.” Spelling errors such as “prefered,” “extint,” “onilne,” and “que” also reduce accuracy. Some phrases, including “highly portable reading sessions,” do not express the intended idea precisely. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully; this would make your vocabulary more precise and flexible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “where,” “which,” and “because,” and the main ideas remain understandable. Some sentences are controlled, such as “In conclusion, people will indeed prefer reading online rather than buying books in the near future.” However, errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction occur across the response. For example, “subscription … are” should be “subscriptions … are” or “a subscription … is”; “gadgets … leads” should be “gadgets … lead”; and “online reading aid individuals” should be “online reading aids individuals.” The sentence beginning “Smartphones and all other types…” also has an unclear grammatical relationship between its subject and “leads.” Review subject–verb agreement and build complex sentences around a clear subject and main verb.
