IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In coming times, people will be more inclined towards online means of reading and watching news without any expenditure rather than going for the traditional newspapers. I strongly agree with this statement as the new generation is more internet friendly and schools and colleges have started to adopt online teaching methods.

Firstly, the newer generation is more fond of internet technology as compared to their older counterparts and the number of internet users are also increasing over time. This will result in the generation of people who will utilize online methods for accessing information about everything happening around the world. For example, a recent survey on diminishing interest of people towards newspapers indicates that only a negligible amount of people still depend upon newspapers for knowing world affairs and that number will soon be zero.

Another reason is that nowadays schools and colleges have converted to using e-books rather than depending on conventional books as they believe that schools should be the birthplace for innovative changes like these. From my perspective, using e-books will attract more and more audience in the future because they will be free of cost so the parents will be free from any financial burden and commuting to schools and colleges will be easy as there will be no need to carry a bag around. For instance, a high number of children choose online methods of teaching to study as the result of the online voting held at a local community center.

To conclude , however online technology is considered relatively new and people are still unaware of the pros and cons it possesses but still the number of people participating in it are increasing by leaps and bounds. This number will only multiply in the future as schools have started to incorporate it in different teaching methods and also the children find it "cool" and will be more inclined towards it in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly agree that online reading will replace printed materials. You give two relevant reasons—greater internet use among younger people and the adoption of e-books in education—and include examples to support them. However, the response focuses more on news and school materials than on the full claim about both newspapers and books, and some support is not fully explained. For instance, the survey and local voting example are asserted without showing how reliable or representative they are. The point that online materials will be free is also treated as certain, although the prompt’s claim about free access could be examined more carefully. Develop these ideas with clearer explanation and acknowledge a relevant limitation or counterpoint.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion that returns to your position. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “Another reason,” and “To conclude” make the progression easy to follow, and the examples are placed alongside the points they support. This meets the lower-band expectation for coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, transitions can feel mechanical, and the conclusion begins with “however” even though it does not set up a clear contrast. Some links between claims also need to be made explicit—for example, how online teaching directly predicts the disappearance of printed books. Use more precise referencing and vary transitions according to the relationship between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “traditional newspapers,” “conventional books,” “financial burden,” and “incorporate.” These choices help communicate your main points, and the meaning remains clear. You also attempt more formal expressions, but some are imprecise or unnatural: “without any expenditure” is less idiomatic than “at no cost,” while “more inclined towards online means of reading” is wordy. “A negligible amount of people” uses an unsuitable quantifier, and “more and more audience” is not a natural collocation. Repeated references to “online methods” and “future” also limit variety. Aim for precise, natural collocations and distinguish clearly between access to online content and whether that content is actually free.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “as they believe that schools should be the birthplace for innovative changes” and a conditional structure with “as there will be no need to carry a bag.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In “the number of internet users are also increasing,” the singular subject “number” requires “is”; similarly, “the number of people participating in it are increasing” needs singular agreement. The sentence beginning “To conclude, however…” is awkwardly joined and would be clearer if divided or recast. Review subject–verb agreement and punctuation around introductory linking expressions, while continuing to use complex structures.
