IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In recent years, reading books or newspaper have become an increasingly popular in our country for young generations. While some contend that in the future people do not buy printed newspaper or books due to online reading,I firmly agree with this view. This essay will examine the principal arguments underpinning my position.

The primary rationale for my position is that poeple can read any newspaers or books from online easily. It is convinient for us to read any books. Another benefit is that they do not pay any fee. In addition, people can read famous book without leaving home. As a result, it reduce cost and save time. For example, a child can read a story book without buying it. It hepls children read more books and gather information about new things. It also allows them to advance their knowledge and good practice to read books.

Another compelling justification for my position is that availability of books. Something several books are not available in shops. This is mainly all books are not require for students. Therefore, the shopkepper keep the limited books. But, in online people can get it without any difficulties. As a result, any one can gain knowledge reading book through online. I storngly agree with that people will not buy physical newspapers or books in future beacuse of easy availability, minimum cost and time management through online.

In conclusion, although reading books though online has some drawbacks, i remain consider that it is more beneficial for all due to free cost and availability.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you firmly agree that online reading will replace buying printed books and newspapers, and both body paragraphs give relevant reasons, including convenience, lower cost and wider availability. The child reading a story without buying it is a useful example. However, the discussion remains limited and several claims are asserted rather than explained. For instance, you say online reading helps children “gather information” and develop “good practice,” but do not show how this supports the prediction that nobody will buy printed material. The point about books unavailable in shops is also not fully developed, and the conclusion briefly mentions drawbacks without identifying or addressing them. Explain the reasons more fully and connect each example directly to the future claim.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Topic sentences such as “The primary rationale” and “Another compelling justification” help signal the main points, while “For example” introduces supporting detail. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the first paragraph moves from free access to children’s learning without explaining the link, and the second contains an unclear sentence beginning “Something several books.” Connect each supporting point more logically and make references explicit. Linking phrases such as “As a result” are repeated, and the conclusion introduces drawbacks that the essay has not discussed. More precise transitions and clearer paragraph development would make the organisation easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use a small range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “availability,” “physical newspapers,” “gain knowledge” and “save time.” These choices help communicate your main ideas, but the vocabulary is repetitive and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning less clear. For example, “free cost” is not a natural expression, “good practice to read books” is unclear, and “minimum cost” does not accurately express the idea that online reading may be free. Spelling errors such as “poeple,” “convinient,” “shopkepper” and “beacuse” are also noticeable. Build a more accurate range of topic vocabulary and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some complex structures, including the opening “While some contend…” clause and the sentence beginning “This is mainly…,” but control is inconsistent. Errors occur in basic sentence patterns as well as longer ones: “reading books or newspaper have become” has problems with agreement and number, “it reduce cost” has an incorrect verb form, and “It hepls children read” contains an incorrect verb form. Articles and sentence construction also need attention, as in “a famous book” and “Something several books are not available in shops.” Punctuation and capitalisation are inconsistent, particularly around commas and the pronoun “I.” Practise accurate simple sentences first, then extend them with subordinate clauses and check agreement, articles and verb forms.
