IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people argue that no one will purchase printed newspapers or books in future because they will access everything they want online without any cost. I partially agree with this statement because, although online resources are convienent and free of costs, i believe many people will still prefer physical books because it provides confortable reading experience without any distractions.

On the one hand, internet provides variety of books and worldwide access of news free of cost. Many people prefer reading digital books and news because they are convienent and time saving as people can read it anywhere at anytime. For example, mobile phones are portable and they can be carried everywhere unlike books and newspapers. Therefore, many people prefer online books.

On the other hand, the feeling and experience of reading physical books is irreplaceable by E-books. Many people find it confortable to turn the pages of physical books because it help them to feel more connected with content. For example, students may prefer learning physical books because they can highlight important points and make notes. In addition, physical books allows people to concentrate and focus in subject matter because they do not have to deal with distractions unlike digital books where people often get distracted by notifications and social media. Therefore, i believe people will still prefer reading printed books in spite of wide avaibality of online resources.

In conclusion, although many people argue that people will no longer purchase printed books and newspapers in future because of availability of free online resources, i believe many people will still prefer physical books because it offers confortable reading ecperience without any distractions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you partially agree, accepting the convenience of free online material while arguing that printed books will remain appealing. Both sides are relevant, and the examples about portable phones, highlighting, and digital notifications support your discussion. This meets the task well, but the two sides are not developed equally: the online paragraph mainly repeats convenience and portability, and the prompt’s prediction about newspapers receives little specific attention. The conclusion restates your view rather than adding a final implication. To strengthen the response further, explain why free online access may not replace paid print publications for all readers, and develop the newspaper aspect alongside books. The position and relevant support are already clear, but some ideas need fuller extension and coverage is not quite even throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, contrasting body paragraphs signposted by “On the one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically, and examples follow the claims they illustrate. Linking expressions such as “For example,” “In addition,” and “Therefore” help the reader follow the argument. However, the repeated “Therefore” conclusions and repeated references to people preferring online or physical books make some cohesion feel mechanical. The final paragraph also largely repeats the introduction and the second body paragraph. Use a wider range of referencing and transitions, and connect each example more explicitly to the central comparison. This would make the progression feel more flexible while preserving the clear paragraphing already present.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use adequate vocabulary to discuss the topic, including “portable,” “distractions,” “notifications,” “concentrate,” and “highlight important points.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and there are attempts at topic-specific phrasing such as “physical books” and “online resources.” However, several spelling errors and imprecise or repetitive expressions limit the range and naturalness: “convienent,” “confortable,” and “avaibality” recur or are misspelled, while “free of costs” and “worldwide access of news” are awkward collocations. Repeated use of “prefer” and “people” also reduces flexibility. Aim for accurate spelling and more precise combinations, such as “access news worldwide” or “at no cost.” This would make the vocabulary more controlled and varied.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a clear concessive structure in the opening (“although online resources are…”) and a reason clause explaining the appeal of print. Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “it provides” and “it help them” do not agree with the plural subjects “books” and “it”; “physical books allows” has the same agreement problem. There are also missing spaces after full stops and inconsistent capitalisation of “I.” In “people can read it anywhere,” the pronoun reference is unclear because it refers to plural “books and news.” Check subject–verb agreement, pronoun reference, and sentence punctuation during revision. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control without sacrificing the range you already attempt.
