IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

No one will purchase hard copies of newspaper or books in the future because they will be able to read everything online without paying.

Most of the things now has been shifted online on multiple platforms because of evolution of technology. Newspaper and book has shifted on internet as well. Digital newspaper are more easy to contain and provide real time news. Similarly books in soft form also easily accessible all over the world. Soft form of these two didn't acquire any physical spaceas it on every computer and device which is connected to internet. All of the users are now shiftted online where everything you want to read is just a click away.

In Contrast, newspaper contain authentic news as compared to online where there is always a risk either new is original or fake. Same goes with books as hard copy contain original data while a little risk is there regarding changing of information in E books as everyone can add anything in it while writing it. For example, people saw news on internet but confirm it from newspaper as hard copies of it contain unchanged data.

In my opinion, digital books and newspaper are fast and easy to access and did not want any physical space but due to authenticity issues, people still choose to read hard copies of them. So in future, we might not see a lot of hard form of newspaper and books but these will not be vanished completely from the world and people will buy it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a relevant, clear overall position: although digital reading is convenient, printed newspapers and books will not disappear completely. You also address both formats and offer a reason for continued print use, namely concerns about the authenticity of online information. However, the discussion is only partly developed: the claim that e-books may contain changed information is asserted rather than explained, and the example about checking online news against a newspaper could be more specific. The response also contains 246 words, so it falls four words short of the 250-word minimum; the eight words copied from the task prompt are not counted. Develop your supporting points further and ensure the response meets the required length.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph about the advantages of digital formats, a contrasting paragraph about reliability, and a concluding opinion. Transitions such as “Similarly,” “In Contrast,” and “In my opinion” help signal the direction of the argument. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear, and several ideas are placed together without a precise link—for example, the discussion moves from accessibility to physical space and then to users shifting online. The contrast paragraph also repeats the authenticity point rather than extending it with a distinct supporting reason. Use clearer topic sentences, organise each paragraph around one main idea, and make references such as “these two” and “it” more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “hard copies,” “real time news,” “accessible,” “authentic,” and “physical space.” These choices make the main contrast between digital and printed reading understandable. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive, which limits precision: “newspaper has shifted on internet,” “more easy to contain,” and “hard form” do not express the intended ideas naturally. There are also spelling and word-form errors, including “shiftted,” “spaceas,” and “E books.” Aim for standard collocations such as “moved online,” “easier to access,” and “printed editions,” and check spelling and word forms carefully. This will make your argument clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including a contrast introduced by “because” and a conditional structure in “if everyone can add anything in it.” The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but frequent errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction make some sentences difficult to follow. Examples include “Most of the things now has been shifted,” “Newspaper and book has shifted,” and “Digital newspaper are.” The sentence beginning “Soft form of these two” also has an unclear grammatical structure, while “didn't acquire” does not fit the general present-time meaning. Practise matching subjects and verbs, using articles and plurals consistently, and building complex sentences with clear clauses. Proofreading each sentence for these patterns would improve accuracy.
