IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

With advancement in technologies and modernization buying books and newspaper are declining day by day. Some people argue that paying for physical books and newspapers will completly stopped in coming days as reading online resources are more convinent and economical which I largely agree. In this essay, I will delve into positive side of the topic.

Firstly, virtual news and books offers immense advantages in regard to cost effectiveness and environmental protection. Buying books from the store can cost a reader a lot in terms of money because it has to cover the profit margins of both writer, publishers and book stores whereas e-books are available in various platforms with fraction of the cost. Likewise, trees are the main sources of papers to print both books and newspapers. To meet the increasing demands, yearly thousand of trees are cut down for the production. It can cause detrimental impacts in the environment. For example: Recent flash flood in Nepal is the effect of melting glaciers due to globa warming.

On the contrary side, some people find reading online resources are not as effective as reading physical newspaper or books. There are various reported health issues due to screen fatigue such as eye problems and headaches. Also, virtual news sometimes might not be based on evidence.

In conclusion, benefits of online readings outweigh the disadvantages as the risk can be managed through conscious browsing and limited screentiming. Government should encourage its people to focus more on factual news and resources and discourage the paper wastage to protect the nature annd human kind.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you largely agree that online reading will replace paid print, and the essay gives relevant reasons involving cost and environmental impact, then acknowledges screen-related health concerns and unreliable online news. This addresses the task, but the discussion is unevenly developed. The cost comparison is explained, while the environmental point is weakened by the Nepal flood example, which does not clearly establish a link between newspaper production and that event. The opposing view is also brief and is not weighed in detail against your position. To strengthen the response, explain how free online access could affect the future of print and develop the counterargument before showing why you still agree overall.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting online reading, a contrasting paragraph, and a conclusion. Sequencing is generally easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “On the contrary side,” and “In conclusion” help readers identify the stages of the argument. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall arrangement and shows some control beyond it. However, the linking can feel mechanical, and some connections between claims are not sufficiently clear. In particular, the Nepal flood example follows the discussion of tree loss without explaining the causal link. Use transitions that express the precise relationship between ideas, and connect examples explicitly to the point they are meant to support.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including phrases such as “cost effectiveness,” “environmental protection,” “detrimental impacts,” and “screen fatigue.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and some less common vocabulary is attempted. However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision: “completly stopped,” “more convinent,” “yearly thousand of trees,” and “paper wastage” are not natural or accurate forms. “Virtual news” is also less precise than “online news.” Aim to use familiar collocations accurately before reaching for more elaborate wording, and proofread spelling and word forms. More precise vocabulary would make the argument sound clearer and more controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a subordinate clause in “because it has to cover the profit margins” and a concession introduced by “although” in the final paragraph’s reasoning. Most sentences remain understandable, so grammatical errors rarely obstruct the message. Some errors nevertheless occur in agreement, articles, plurals, and verb forms. For example, “virtual news and books offers” should have a plural verb, while “paying for physical books and newspapers will completly stopped” needs a correctly formed verb phrase. The sentence beginning “some people find reading online resources are not as effective” also has an awkward clause structure. Review subject–verb agreement and verb patterns, and vary complex sentences while checking that each clause is complete.
