IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, there has been an argument that printed newspapers or books will not be bought in the future because every person will be able to read anything on internet free of cost. I agree with this statement because it will reduce the cost and effort need to buy either a newspaper or book.

One of the main reasons supporting this view is that it will save the money spent on buying those printed piece of papers. On one hand, many people wants to know the economic and political condition of their country everyday. As a result, they buy a newspaper daily to get to know about their beloved country. On the other hand, certain individuals are keen in reading different types of books because they give us information and send us to another universe. However, they spend a huge amount of money on buying these products but they can save their money by reading it online.

Another major reason for my agreement to this statement is that it will finish visits to shops or libraries for buying books or newspapers. For buying these printed products, individuals will have to go to a certain shop or library. Sometimes, they will have to use transportation, if the shop is not nearby. Moreover, people who read books visits a library to borrow a book and return it once they finish reading. It also require at least two visits to a library for reading just one book. However, in the future, they can read anything online while sitting at their homes.

In conclusion, I will say that nobody will buy printed newspapers or books in the fututre and use online reading beacuse it will save their money and finish the visits to shops or libraries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you agree that online access will reduce purchases of printed newspapers and books. You support this with two relevant reasons—saving money and avoiding trips to shops or libraries—and the conclusion restates your view. This addresses the task, but the discussion is not equally developed throughout. The cost argument gives examples of newspaper and book readers, while the convenience argument mainly describes travel and borrowing; neither fully considers whether free online access will actually be available for everything or why some people may still prefer printed material. To strengthen the response, explain the limits of your claim and develop each reason with more specific support rather than presenting the future outcome as certain.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs organised around separate reasons, and a conclusion. The progression from saving money to saving time and effort is easy to follow, and signposts such as “One of the main reasons” and “Another major reason” help identify the argument. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, several links feel mechanical, particularly the repeated “On one hand” and “On the other hand,” which do not express a clear contrast here. Some references are also vague, as in “they give us information” and “It also require,” where the reader must infer the intended subject. Use more precise referencing and connect examples to the main point more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including topic-related terms such as “economic and political condition,” “transportation,” and “borrow a book.” There are also attempts at more descriptive language, for example “send us to another universe.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “printed piece of papers,” “keen in reading,” and “finish visits” do not express the ideas idiomatically. Some wording is also repetitive, especially “buying” and “read.” Spelling errors such as “fututre” and “beacuse” further affect control. Build a more reliable range of natural collocations for discussing cost, access, and convenience, and check spelling and word forms during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “while,” and “if.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the errors do not generally prevent the reader from following your argument. Some grammatical problems nevertheless recur. For example, “many people wants” has subject–verb disagreement, “people who read books visits” has the same issue, and “It also require” needs a matching verb form. There are also problems with articles and sentence construction, as in “on internet” and “For buying these printed products.” To improve, check agreement between subjects and verbs, especially in longer sentences, and review article use and clause structure while keeping the range of sentence patterns you already attempt.
