IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the modren era, many people buy printed newspapers or books to get information. Some people argue that people will be able to access online resourses to get information and no-one will buy printed newspapers or books. I compeletly disagree with this statement.

To begin with, due to the modren technology, undoubtly it is possible that people wil be able to read everything they want using internet and without paying. I personally believe that there are numerous advantages by getting knowledge using online resourse. Additionaly, one of the main advantage is that you can read whatever you want from any corner of the world by using internet. In addition, you don't have to pay for buying books and newspapers because you are able to know through the internet. For instance, recently I had an exam but donn't had book. I simply search on the internet and got a lot of knowledge about what is inside the book. Then, I gave the exam and got very good marks. However, it saved my money that I was going to spend to purchase the book.

From my point of view, although reading online is very beneficial but it is totally wrong statement that nobody will purchase printed newspapers and books to read in the future. Furthermore, I think that some people like to read through books or newspapers because they like the smell of newly printed book. In addition, reading via hardcopy has a great aura and legacy.

In conclusion, I totally disagree with the statement. Althogh, getting knowledge through the internet is very easy but people will want to experience great leagacy through books.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear from the introduction—“I completely disagree”—and is repeated in the conclusion. You address the contrast between free online reading and continued demand for print, giving relevant reasons such as the convenience of internet access and some readers’ enjoyment of physical books. However, the argument is only partly developed: the exam example mainly shows that online material can be useful, rather than explaining why printed books will continue to be bought. The points about the smell of a new book and the “aura and legacy” of hard copies are also asserted rather than explained or supported. Develop these reasons with clearer examples, and consider other practical reasons people may still choose print, to make the response more fully persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “To begin with,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument, and the reader can follow your main position. Some connections are mechanical or unclear, though. “However, it saved my money” does not clearly contrast with the preceding point, and the first body paragraph spends considerable space explaining online benefits before connecting them to your disagreement. The second body paragraph introduces the central reason for continued print use, but its ideas are not extended. Use transitions that show the precise relationship between points, and organise each paragraph around one clearly developed claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “access,” “advantages,” “purchase,” and “hardcopy,” and your meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “aura and legacy,” although these are not natural or precise in this context. Repetition of “information,” “internet,” and “read” limits the range, while spelling errors such as “modren,” “resourses,” “compeletly,” and “Althogh” are noticeable. Some combinations are also awkward, for example “advantages by getting knowledge” and “from any corner of the world.” Build a more accurate range of topic vocabulary and check spelling and collocations; this will make your ideas clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a concession with “although” and a reason introduced by “because.” The overall meaning is usually clear, but errors occur in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction. For example, “I simply search” should use a past-tense form to match the exam story, and “one of the main advantage” needs a plural noun. The sentence “although reading online is very beneficial but…” combines two contrasting structures incorrectly; use either “although” or “but.” In “I don’t had book,” the auxiliary and verb form do not agree, and the sentence needs an article. Review these patterns and proofread for tense consistency while continuing to practise varied sentence structures.
