IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often predicted that due to availability of free books and newspaper on the internet, people would not purchase physical copies of newspaper or books in the near future. Although digital publications may gain popularity but it surely can not be a replacement of printed publications. I disagree with the statement that physical copies would become completely obsolete, as printed material offer certain advantages and online reading require payment.
One of the main reason why digital publications are gaining popularity in contrast to printed publications is their convenience and accessibility. Being able to read and gain information at your ease wherever and whenever you want is a big plus point . Modern technology is a big helping hand as devices such as mobile phone and laptops make is quite convenient for the reader to access a wide range of information read their desired reading material. Furthermore readily available and free reading material is scattered all over the internet ready to be read by the users.
However despite these advantages printed publications are unlikely to disappear entirely. Because dependency on the internet or the electricity is a big drawback for online reading. Hence here printed publications is more sensible as it does not depend on either, nor is it a cause of an health problem such as eyesight issues faced by reading from a screen. These Ultra Violet lights are harmful for every user at every age. Therefore there is still an higher percentage of reader that prefer reading from a physical copy rather than from a screen.
Hence digital reading will grow, but printed publications will not disappear entirely and online content will not all be free.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you disagree that printed publications will become completely obsolete, and you address both digital reading’s appeal and reasons print may remain. Convenience, accessibility and the possibility of screen-related discomfort are relevant points. However, some parts of the argument are less fully developed. For example, the claim that online content will not all be free appears only in the introduction and conclusion, without an explanation or example in the body. The health argument is also stated broadly, particularly the claim about “Ultra Violet lights,” rather than carefully supported. Develop these points with specific reasoning, and make the distinction between free online material and paid content clearer, to address the task more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on digital advantages, a paragraph defending print, and a concluding summary. This makes the main line of argument easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “However,” and “Therefore.” At times, though, cohesion feels mechanical or the links between ideas are unclear. The opening of the print paragraph, “However despite these advantages,” combines two contrast markers, while “Hence here” does not clearly show how the point follows. Some references, such as “it” in “it does not depend on either,” require the reader to infer the intended noun. Use fewer, more precise transitions and connect each supporting sentence explicitly to its paragraph’s main idea.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “convenience,” “accessibility,” “physical copies,” and “obsolete.” There are also attempts at less common or descriptive expressions, such as “dependency” and “a big helping hand,” although some choices are imprecise or informal for an academic essay. “Newspaper” and “publications” are repeated often, and phrases such as “free reading material is scattered all over the internet” sound less natural than more precise alternatives. There are also word-form and spelling issues, including “newspaper” where a plural is needed and “can not.” Aim for more accurate collocations and vary key terms without forcing elaborate expressions; this will make the argument sound more controlled and academic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concession in “Although digital publications may gain popularity…” and a reason clause beginning “Because dependency on the internet…”. The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some errors in agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence construction remain. For example, “printed material offer” should have a singular verb, while “online reading require” needs agreement; “an health problem” also has an incorrect article. The sentence beginning “Because dependency…” is a fragment, and the opening sentence’s “Although … but” construction is not grammatically well formed. Review subject–verb agreement and article use, and ensure dependent clauses are joined to complete sentences. More accurate control of these patterns would strengthen the range you are already attempting.
