IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Reading daily newspaper is a good habit and in free time reading books. But in future no one will buy the newspaper and books because as the technology is changing day by day.

I agree with this statement because the daily lifestyle is changing. People wont have that much time now a days to buy and read the newspaper and books.Because of internet facilities we can download all the things and it remain stored in our device like laptop, mobiles and ipad etc.

In some kind of things I disagree because it may perhaps loose the job of some people of selling books and newspaper. Newspaper has the magazine for the small children which was useful but because of online system it may not be their. No one reads the book online. By purchasing the book we fill the satisfaction that we have purchased it and should be read it is kept lifetime with us. But online books and newspaper are deleted after reading or sometimes the file may get corrupted because of viruses present in the devices. So its better to purchase the book and newspaper from the shop.

Buying both the things is a good habit and we can carry every where and read whenwe want it. Every peoples opinion are different. Online things are good as well as bad in some cases. If it is easily available no one have the value of that things. And by taking some efforts we feel satisfaction and have a calming effect on our face.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address the topic and give a mixed position: you agree that technology will reduce purchases, but also argue that printed books and newspapers retain value. The points about convenient digital storage, jobs in book and newspaper sales, and the satisfaction of owning a physical book are relevant. However, the position is not fully clear: “I agree” is followed by several reasons to buy print, including the conclusion that it is “better to purchase” these items. Some claims also need explanation or support, such as “No one reads the book online” and the suggestion that digital files are deleted after reading. State clearly how far you agree, then develop fewer, more convincing reasons with examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an identifiable opening, a discussion of both sides, and a concluding paragraph, so the reader can recognise its broad structure. However, progression between ideas is uneven, and the second paragraph shifts quickly from digital convenience to employment, children’s magazines, ownership, and file corruption. Linking words such as “But,” “because,” and “So” are used, but some connections are unclear or repetitive; for example, “In some kind of things I disagree” does not clearly introduce the specific counterargument. The final paragraph repeats the general contrast between online and printed material rather than drawing the argument together. Organise each body paragraph around one main reason and use clearer references and transitions to show how each point supports your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “technology,” “download,” “stored,” “purchasing,” and “corrupted.” There are also attempts to express more abstract points, such as the “satisfaction” of owning a book. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations sound unnatural or make meaning less precise: “daily lifestyle,” “internet facilities,” “loose the job,” and “calming effect on our face.” Spelling and word forms also need attention, as in “wont” and “every peoples.” Aim for precise, natural phrases and check spelling; for example, describe people as “losing their jobs” and refer to “internet access” rather than “internet facilities.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a reason clause beginning “because” and a contrast introduced by “But.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence formation, agreement, verb forms, and punctuation sometimes make the argument difficult to follow. The opening, “Reading daily newspaper is a good habit and in free time reading books,” is not a complete, well-formed sentence. Other examples include “it remain stored,” “No one reads the book online,” and “Every peoples opinion are different.” Several sentences are joined or punctuated awkwardly, such as “books.Because of internet facilities.” Practise complete sentence patterns, subject–verb agreement, articles, and consistent punctuation, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
