IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is convenient for public to read books and newspapers online and often free nowadays. Some people argue that priented newspapers and books will nolonger be purchased in the future because all material available on internet without paying. I partly disagree with this view becasue printed newspaper and books still have advantages.

On the one hand, online reading has became increasingly popular these days. People can easily access news, articles and books on thier mobile phones and laptops. Moreover, many websites provide free material and information which can help people in their study tasks. For exmaple, student can download free study course and also take free classes on YouTube which allows them to improve thier skills and knowledge. Therefore, the demand for printed books may decrease in the future.

On the other hand, I believe that printed books and newspaper will not disapear completely. Many peopel enjoy physical reading instead of digital distraction. Furthermore, reading books for a long time may more usefule for some individuals than looking at a screen. It is conveninet for some pupils to read books at any place, they can carry them easily For instance, for some stuents, they can easily highlight some points and make some important notes which they connot do on phones. In addition, not all content is free, as some of them require subscriptions.

In conclusion, although, omline reading will become common because of its convenience and low budget, I believe that priented books and newspaper will continous to be purchased by people becasue some people prefer tradtional reading.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you partly disagree because printed books and newspapers retain advantages, while online reading is convenient and often free. You address both sides and support them with relevant examples, such as free YouTube classes and the ability to highlight or annotate printed pages. This gives the response a sound, relevant basis. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: for example, the claim that reading a physical book for a long time may be more useful is not clarified, and the annotation example could be linked more directly to why people will continue buying print. Develop these explanations and distinguish more clearly between free online material and content that requires payment to make the argument more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs signposted by “On the one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a conclusion that restates your view. The ideas generally progress logically, and examples are placed alongside the points they support. Some connections are less smooth, however. The sentence beginning “It is convenient for some pupils” runs into the example about highlighting without clear punctuation, and “For instance, for some students” repeats the same framing. The conclusion’s opening “although” also makes the sentence feel awkwardly joined. Use clearer sentence boundaries and vary linking expressions; make references such as “them” unmistakably point to the intended noun. This would make the organisation feel more fluent rather than occasionally mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “digital distraction,” “subscriptions,” “physical reading,” and “demand.” There is also some attempt to express distinctions between online and printed material. However, spelling errors are noticeable throughout, including “priented,” “becasue,” “thier,” and “disapear,” and several word choices or combinations are unnatural, such as “low budget” for the low cost of online reading and “free study course.” These slips sometimes make the reader pause, even though the intended meaning is usually recoverable. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations as complete phrases. More precise vocabulary for the benefits and limitations of each format would also help you express your ideas with greater control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including contrast clauses with “although” and “because,” and the main argument remains understandable. Some sentence patterns are controlled, such as “Many websites provide free material and information which can help people in their study tasks.” However, errors in verb forms, articles, agreement, and sentence construction recur. For example, “online reading has became” uses the wrong verb form, while “all material available on internet” is missing a verb and article. In “reading books for a long time may more useful,” the adjective needs a linking verb. The sentence about carrying books also joins two independent ideas with only a comma. Review these patterns and proofread for complete clauses, correct verb forms, and punctuation; greater accuracy would make your varied structures easier to follow.
