IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the future no one will buy printed newspaper or books because they will read everything online without paying. I will agree with this view that online reading will become more dominant.

Firstly, the printed newspaper and books are convenient for eveyone because in online they want to read anything easily as it is free of cost and tou do not pay for it. For example, students will learn and read anything related to their studies they easily download in pdf form and read from it. They do not pay for these notes.Furthermore, it is very easy to carry anywhere and you will put 1000 of books and notes in your moblie phone and you will get updated easily about any new information. It is very eco-friedly. Although, the Dawn newspaper will free online and no need to pay for it.

On the other hand, their are some drawbacks such as when you focus on screen for hours it causes headache and eye strain. However, the printed books are comfortable for reading. Children and older people prefer paper reading. Furthermore, in online fake news will spread so printed newspaper is a trustworthy. You will reading books and newspaper everywhere without internet. For example, in villages people face many electricity problems so printed is very convenient. owever manypeople still love thr fellings of holding a real book and building a small library in home

In conclusion, online will be popular in the future but physical books will not completely disappeare because of their health benefits trustworthiness, and unique reading experience.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You present a relevant position: online reading will become more popular, but printed books will not disappear. The response addresses both sides, with supporting points about free access, portability, eye strain, unreliable online news, and limited electricity in villages. However, the position is not fully consistent: the opening says you agree that online reading will dominate, while the conclusion argues that printed books will remain, without clearly stating how far you agree with the claim that nobody will buy them. Several points are also asserted rather than explained—for example, the claim that online reading is “eco-friendly” and the reference to Dawn could be connected more clearly to your argument. State your degree of agreement directly and develop fewer points with clearer explanations or examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, a paragraph supporting online reading, a paragraph presenting drawbacks, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “Furthermore,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help signal the main stages. However, progression within paragraphs is uneven: the first body paragraph moves from convenience to students, portability, environmental impact, and Dawn without clearly showing how each point connects. Some links are mechanical or confusing, particularly “Although, the Dawn newspaper will free online,” and “However” does not clearly express the relationship between the preceding and following ideas. Improve cohesion by grouping related points, using accurate transitions, and making references such as “it” and “they” unambiguous. A clearer topic sentence for each body paragraph would also strengthen the overall progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “eye strain,” “fake news,” “trustworthiness,” and “electricity problems.” These choices help communicate the contrast between digital and printed reading. However, the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, sometimes making the meaning difficult to follow: “in online,” “free of cost,” “printed is very convenient,” and “the feelings of holding a real book.” Spelling errors such as “eveyone,” “moblie,” “eco-friedly,” and “disappeare” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully. For example, describe online material as “available free of charge,” and say that printed books are “convenient when internet access is unavailable.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a conditional example about village electricity problems and a contrast between online and printed reading. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently in sentence structure, verb forms, agreement, and articles. Examples include “I will agree with this view,” “students will learn … they easily download,” “their are some drawbacks,” and “You will reading books.” Several sentences also run together, as in “They do not pay for these notes.Furthermore,” which affects readability. Practise forming complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement and tense consistency. For instance, “Students can download study materials as PDFs and read them without paying” expresses one idea accurately and clearly.
