IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the future nobody will buy paper books and newspaper because they can read everything with availability of electronic devices and online access without paying. I completely disagree with this view point because distractions and maintain healthy lifestyle.

One of the major reason of my agreement is distractions. This is due to the fact that most of people like to read printed books or articles because they can read any kind of information in peaceful and quiet place where reading on moblies is also beneficial but in moblie phones and laptop after a seconds they get many notifications on it by which people get easily distracted and can not able to read more that is why majority of individuals still like to read paper books. For instance, young people prefer paper books because they want to observe and feel the story with reality and pure interest. Thus, printed material can not abandon in future.

Another worth considering reason of my approval is build reading habit. This means that, by spending more and more time in front of the screen leads eyes problems and other disease. They not only want to protect their self but also build habit to get information in detail by reading books offline because sometimes the news and details regarding books is wrong where people can believe on it. Therefore, paper books are still useful in future.

To conclude, even though with the help of technology people can read books and newspaper anywhere and free, I believe that it will not abandon in future because of distractions and build reading habbit.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you completely disagree that printed books and newspapers will disappear, and both body paragraphs give relevant reasons—digital distractions and concerns about screen use and reading habits. The examples about notifications and young people preferring to experience a story in print help connect your argument to the topic. However, the response only partly develops the task: the claim that online information may be wrong is introduced briefly, and the point about building a reading habit is not fully explained. The opening also repeats the prompt’s claim rather than clarifying the extent of your disagreement in your own terms. Develop each reason with a clearer explanation and a specific example, and address the claim that online reading is free more directly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Linking phrases such as “For instance,” “Thus,” and “To conclude” help signal examples and the ending. However, some connections feel mechanical or do not accurately express the relationship between ideas. For example, “One of the major reason of my agreement” conflicts with your stated disagreement, while “This means that” does not clearly connect the screen-health point to the idea of building a reading habit. References such as “they” in the second body paragraph are also not always clear. Use topic sentences that match your position and make each paragraph’s reasoning progress step by step.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “printed books,” “notifications,” “distracted,” “screen,” and “reading habit.” There are also attempts to use more formal expressions, such as “worth considering” and “therefore.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive, which sometimes makes the argument less clear. Phrases such as “my agreement,” “build reading habit,” “eyes problems,” and “abandon in future” do not express the intended meaning naturally. Spelling errors, including “moblie” and “habbit,” also reduce accuracy. Build a wider set of precise expressions for discussing print and digital media, and check whether each phrase is idiomatic in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a reason clause beginning “because” and a sentence using “where” to contrast reading formats. However, control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and verb forms sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “One of the major reason” needs a plural noun, and “people … can not able to read” combines incompatible verb forms. The sentence beginning “This means that” also has a faulty structure: “by spending … leads” does not form a grammatical subject and verb relationship. Practise building accurate sentences around one main clause, then add subordinate clauses carefully. Check subject–verb agreement and verb patterns when revising.
