IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

As technologhy is expending dramatically people would stop purchasing printed newspapers due to social media . i fully agree with this statement .

First of all, nowsday only elderly people read printed newspaper due to their old habbite of reading except them everyone else is addicted to social media since every information related to the world is availabe on it with free of cost and as newspaper people did not have to carry it everywhere they can just use their smart phone to see news and whats happening around the world.

Secondly, their are alot more useful uses of social media which we can use such as an entertainment source like you tube and instagram on which we can see reels and education stuff videos whereas people can also play videogame online with their friends and explore more about the tech they are using .

Conclusion, however almost everyone is using social media nowsday to see news and for entertainment purpose but still elderly people prefer paper newspaper for reading news due to there old reading habbits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

Your position is clear: “i fully agree,” and you give relevant reasons, including the convenience of accessing news on a smartphone and the additional entertainment and educational uses of social media. However, the response addresses the prompt only partially. It focuses mainly on newspapers and social media, while the question also asks whether people will stop buying printed books and whether online material will be free. These points are not discussed. The reasons are also briefly stated rather than explained with examples or consequences, and the conclusion introduces elderly readers without resolving your claim that nobody will buy print. The response is 177 words, below the required 250. Develop both books and newspapers, address the “without paying” claim, and support your position in more detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs signalled by “First of all” and “Secondly,” and a conclusion. This helps the reader identify the main points. However, progression within paragraphs is limited: the second paragraph moves from entertainment and education to video games and technology without clearly linking these examples to the future of printed books and newspapers. Some connections are also awkward or unclear, such as “and as newspaper people did not have to carry it everywhere.” The conclusion largely repeats the earlier point about social media and elderly readers rather than bringing the argument together. Use clearer links between each reason and the question, and make paragraph endings show how the evidence supports your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “printed newspaper,” “social media,” “smart phone,” “entertainment source,” and “education stuff videos.” This gives the reader a basic sense of your subject. However, the range is limited and several choices or spellings are inaccurate, which makes the writing less clear and natural. Examples include “technologhy,” “expending,” “nowsday,” “habbite,” and “availabe.” Phrases such as “with free of cost” and “education stuff videos” are also not idiomatic. Aim for more precise expressions, such as “available free of charge,” “educational videos,” and “digital news platforms.” Check spelling carefully and avoid repeating “social media” when a clear alternative such as “online platforms” would fit.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, for example the sentence beginning “First of all” and the contrast introduced by “whereas.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. In “their are alot more useful uses,” the subject–verb form is incorrect; “people did not have to carry it everywhere” shifts tense unnecessarily; and “elderly people prefer paper newspaper” needs a plural or an article. Several sentences run on, with ideas joined by “and” without clear punctuation. Use shorter, complete sentences when presenting examples, and check subject–verb agreement, tense consistency, and sentence boundaries. More accurate control of these basics would make your ideas easier to understand.
