IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 4.0)

There are several reasons why fewer people buy traditional newspapers and printed books in the upcoming years. Online informations are cheaper and also convinient. Individuals easily read news, articlas, books on their phone to any corner of the world and any time. They do not carry any additional materials with them. In addition, virtual content give us bunch of variety of content. For instance, if a person bore while reading book so he immidiately switch on other book.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

You identify relevant reasons why people may choose digital reading, including lower cost, convenience, portability and variety. However, the response does not directly state whether you agree or disagree with the claim that nobody will buy printed books or newspapers, and it does not discuss the absolute prediction that all reading will be free online. The ideas are only briefly mentioned: for example, the point about switching books is not explained or connected to printed media. The response also falls substantially short of the required 250 words, leaving the task only minimally addressed. To improve, state your position clearly and develop both supporting reasons and a qualification, such as why some readers may still prefer print or paid content.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The ideas follow a basic sequence: you introduce the decline of print, then give reasons related to cost, convenience and choice. Linking expressions such as “In addition” and “For instance” help show how points relate. However, the response is a single short paragraph, so there is no clear essay structure or progression from an introduction to developed body paragraphs and a conclusion. Some connections are also unclear, particularly the example about becoming bored and switching books, which needs a clearer link to your argument. Organise the response into paragraphs, use each body paragraph for one main reason, and finish by restating your position. This would make the argument easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use a relevant set of basic topic words, including “traditional newspapers,” “printed books,” “online,” and “content,” so the general subject is understandable. There are also attempts to express useful concepts such as convenience and variety. However, spelling errors and inaccurate word forms are noticeable, including “informations,” “convinient,” “articlas,” “immidiately,” and “bore.” Some phrases are unnatural or imprecise, such as “to any corner of the world” and “bunch of variety of content.” These issues limit clarity and control of vocabulary. Check spelling and countable or uncountable forms, and practise natural collocations such as “a wide range of content” and “access news from anywhere.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You communicate several simple ideas using basic sentence patterns, and the opening sentence gives a clear general topic. There is an attempt to add a conditional example with “if,” but the sentence is not grammatically controlled: “if a person bore while reading book so he immidiately switch” needs a correct verb form and a clearer clause structure. Other errors include subject–verb agreement in “virtual content give” and missing articles or plural forms in “reading book” and “other book.” Most sentences rely on simple structures, with little variety or accurate complex sentence use. Practise forming complete conditional sentences and check agreement, articles and verb forms; for example, “If a reader gets bored with one book, they can immediately switch to another.”
