IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that in the upcomping era the trend of buying books and newapaper will not be as common as online reading of news and books due to availability of everything on the web. The essay agrees with the statement because due to advancement of technology everything is available online within no time with too many varierties and variants, also due to lazy life style of the upcoming generation they wanted to have everything available in doors.

One of the reasons that online books and newspapers will be in trend in future is that people can opt them in their preffered style and language with the advancement of the artificial intelligence and technology. Furthermore, with too much happening in the world people will be updated in no time via online news and trends. For example, i have an apllication of al-jazeera and i got an update for every new news reducing my dependency on the printed newspaper.

The upcoming lazy lifestyle of the upcoming generation is something thats is going to make printed newspapers and books extinct in no time. Similarly, new generation will not prefer to actually make effort of going to stores and make purchase of book because their life style and schedule is too occupied. For example there is too much data available online about every subject that people tend to get everything in soft copies because they know there will be new innformation added any time and getting it online is going to save them time and cost both.

In conclusion the trend of printed books and newspaper will be less common due availabilty of everything in different varriants that can be availed anytime without any efforts and hassle.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you agree that online reading will reduce the popularity of printed books and newspapers. You give relevant reasons, including instant news updates, access to different languages and formats, and the convenience of avoiding trips to shops. The Al-Jazeera example helps illustrate how online news can be updated quickly. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, describing the next generation as “lazy” is a broad claim; explain more precisely how convenience or changing habits may affect print purchases. The claim that everything will be available online without payment is also not directly examined, even though it is central to the prompt. Develop this issue and qualify your conclusion for a fuller response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates the position. The ideas generally progress from online access and updates to convenience and changing habits. You also use linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Similarly,” and “For example.” At times, however, connections feel mechanical or the reference is unclear. “Similarly” introduces a related but distinct point, while “also” in the introduction joins several claims without showing how they relate. The repeated focus on the “upcoming generation” also makes the progression less distinct. Use topic sentences that identify each paragraph’s main argument, and connect examples explicitly to the point they support.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “dependency,” “soft copies,” “availability,” and “advancement of technology.” These choices help communicate your main ideas, and the reader can generally understand your meaning. However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural combinations reduce accuracy: examples include “upcomping,” “newapaper,” “varierties,” and “available in doors.” Some wording is also repetitive, particularly “upcoming” and “everything,” while “lazy lifestyle” is an over-generalised description. Aim for more precise collocations and proofread spelling. Replacing broad phrases with terms such as “digital access,” “convenience,” or “changing reading habits” would make the discussion more controlled and appropriately academic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because” and “with,” and most of the argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, particularly with agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “they wanted to have everything” shifts into the past tense despite discussing the future, and “people can opt them” has an unclear pronoun reference. In “the trend … will be less common,” the subject and description do not fit together naturally; the trend itself would more clearly “decline.” There are also punctuation issues in the long opening sentence, where several ideas are joined without clear boundaries. Review tense consistency and build complex sentences with clear subjects and clauses.
