IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is irrefutable that traditional circulation of newspapers and books have reduced as the younger generation migrate to screen and it is generally believed that the existence of these items will completely dissappear in the near future. However, I disagree with the latter half of the given statement and shall discuss my viewpoints in the forthcoming paragraphs.
To begin with, most of the people nowadays prefer reading newspapers, journals, comics or stories online because they are less expensive and more convenient on the internet. People can carry thousand of books and journals in their phones and some people also suggest that in this way, the use of paper would decline and thus, there will be less cutting of trees.
However, several readers still enjoy physical books rather than online reading as they want a rest from eye strains caused by constant attention on screens. They find reading as a way to unplug from mobile phones. Keeping several printed books also serve as a historical reservation, personal libraries and a form of decorative home items.
Furthermore, it is not a permanent fact that digital newspapers will stay free off cost, even now, several reputable journals, books and newspapers require subscriptions to have an ad free experience. Free sites might lack in quality and might also mislead with wrong information. Finally, creating online journals and books require paid journalists, writers and editors so, they might not remain completely free in the future.
To conclude, it is a true fact that the use of online services is increasing in readers but and the use of physical newspapers and books might be reduced but it will not completey dissappear as they are still in demand of several people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you accept that online reading is growing but reject the claim that printed books and newspapers will disappear. You address both the shift to digital media and reasons print may remain, including eye strain, personal libraries, and the possibility that online content will not stay free. These are relevant points, and the examples about subscriptions and the costs of producing journalism help support your view. However, some ideas are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the claim that printed books serve as a “historical reservation” is unclear, and the point about decorative items could be linked more directly to continued demand. Develop each reason with a clearer explanation or example to make the argument more consistently convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your position, the body presents the advantages of online reading and reasons print may persist, and the conclusion restates your view. Paragraphing is appropriate, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “However,” and “Furthermore” help readers follow the argument. Some connections are less smooth or precise, though. The first body paragraph describes the convenience of online reading, but the transition to the environmental point is abrupt. In the conclusion, “but and” disrupts the sentence and weakens the final summary. Aim to connect each supporting point explicitly to your central argument, and use linking phrases where they clarify relationships rather than simply announce a new point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “subscriptions,” “reputable journals,” “eye strains,” and “unplug,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the forthcoming paragraphs.” However, several word choices, collocations, and spelling forms are inaccurate or unnatural, sometimes making the intended meaning less clear. “Historical reservation” does not express the likely idea of preserving books for posterity, while “free off cost” and “in demand of several people” are not natural English expressions. Spelling errors such as “dissappear” and “completey” are also noticeable. Build accuracy by checking collocations and spelling, and prefer clear, natural expressions over formal-sounding phrases you are unsure about.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “as,” and “so,” and most of the argument remains understandable. Some sentence patterns are controlled, such as “They find reading as a way to unplug from mobile phones.” However, errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction recur. For example, “circulation … have reduced” needs a singular verb, and “Keeping several printed books also serve” has a subject–verb agreement problem. “People can carry thousand of books” also needs a plural form and an appropriate determiner. The final sentence contains a faulty conjunction sequence. Review agreement and sentence boundaries, then proofread complex sentences to ensure each clause is grammatically complete.
