IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 7.0)
It is a widely held view that the sales of traditional newspapers or book will decrease since people will have access to them online without any cost. Though the number of people buying printed books or newspapers will see a dip, I believe they cannot be completely replaced as some people prefer to feel the paper while reading and staring at a screen for a long time can be detrimental to the eyes.
The primary reason for this view is that many people prefer to read conventional forms of paper rather than the digital ones. There are some people who do not feel like they are reading something unless the article has a real form. To them, reading is done better when they are able to feel the paper instead of just seeing the words visually. For example, many elderly people rarely use e-books since they cannot feel the paper that they are reading.
Another reason for this view is that looking at a screen for a long time can be harmful for the eyes. The words on a digital device is often small and extremely bright. As a result, staring at them for a prolonged period may strain the eye muscles and harm the retina. Consequently, this can cause irreversible damage to the eyes. Moreover, blue rays are radiated from digital screens which are proven to be harmful for the eyes.
To sum it up, although online forms of books and newspaper will be popular in the forseeable future, they cannot completely replace conventional forms of paper as a number of people prefer traditional form of paper and digital screens can damage the eyes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction: printed publications may decline, but you do not believe they will disappear completely. Both supporting points are relevant and explained, particularly the preference for the physical feel of paper and concerns about prolonged screen use. This addresses the question directly. However, the discussion focuses mainly on why some people will continue to choose print; it gives less attention to the claim that online reading will be free, or to how free access might affect purchasing. The example about elderly readers is relevant but broad, and the health argument would benefit from more careful qualification rather than presenting serious eye damage as certain. Developing these aspects more fully would make the response more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear, effective structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs each develop a distinct reason, and the conclusion restates your position. The progression within the paragraphs is generally easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “As a result” and “Moreover” help show relationships between ideas. This is a strong organisational foundation. Some connections are a little mechanical, however, and the repeated framing of “another reason for this view” and “to sum it up” makes the structure predictable. The conclusion also repeats the main points rather than drawing them together. Use a wider range of referencing and transitions, and make the links between claims and examples more explicit, to create a smoother progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “conventional forms,” “digital device,” “prolonged period,” and “irreversible damage.” These choices allow you to explain your position clearly, and some less common expressions show an attempt to be precise. There are, however, several awkward or inaccurate collocations and word choices: “real form” is unclear, “feel the paper” is repeated, and “blue rays are radiated” is not a natural way to describe screen light. “Forseeable” is also misspelled; the correct spelling is “foreseeable.” Repetition of “eyes,” “paper,” and “forms” limits flexibility. Aim for more natural collocations and vary key terms, while checking spelling and the exact meaning of less familiar expressions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concessive opening with “Though” and a relative clause in “which are proven to be harmful.” Many sentences are clear and correctly punctuated, and the grammatical errors do not prevent the reader from following your argument. A few errors remain: “book” should be plural in “newspapers or book,” “The words … is” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “a number of people prefer traditional form” needs an article or plural form. There is also some awkward sentence construction in “There are some people who do not feel like they are reading something unless the article has a real form.” Review agreement, articles, and plural nouns, and vary sentence patterns further while maintaining accuracy.
