IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the contemporary world, the future of digital tools for reading and writing is a phenomenon that is highly addressed at the moment. It is contended that people will shift towards online mode of learning over a long period of time. I partially agree with the statement as I believe that despite of technological advancements, some individuals would still prefer to read and write on a paper rather than relying on digital tools.

On the one hand, one viewpoint is that undoubtedly digital applications, such as online books, newspapers or websites are more convenient in terms of their cost-effectiveness and time-saving properties. A significant proportion of individuals prefer to read news or study from the comfort of their homes. This not only saves their valuable time but also saves cost for commuting. For instance, students can choose to study the courses of their interests and can download any usefull study-related material from different websites. Moreover, people can easily access to usefull information or any emergency news from their phones. To illustrate, individuals living abroad could watch everything happening in their home countries online.

However, I believe that the advancements in digital technology would not completely replace the use of printed books or newspapers. Numerous pupils would still prefer to read printed books because they would conitunue to be fascinated by the feeling holding a paper-based book or newspaper. A good example of this is, majority of the older generations would prefer to read newspapers despite the availability of any digital tool. Furthermore, the libraries with a plenty of printed journals, articles or fictional books would not replace those with online materials.

In conclusion, although the advancement of digital tools comes with a list of advantages, I believe that this won't entirely eliminate the printed books in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you partially agree because online reading is convenient, but printed materials will continue to appeal to some people. You address both sides and support the digital side with examples such as studying from home and accessing news from abroad. The counterargument is relevant, particularly the preference of older readers and the continuing role of libraries. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: the claim that people will remain “fascinated” by holding a book could be developed by explaining the practical or personal value of print. The discussion also shifts to “online mode of learning,” while the prompt focuses on buying newspapers and books, including whether online content will be free. Addressing that free-access claim directly would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction states your position, two body paragraphs present contrasting views, and the conclusion restates your judgement. Paragraphing is appropriate, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “However,” and “In conclusion” make the argument easy to follow. Examples are generally placed beside the points they support. To make the progression more flexible and precise, reduce formulaic framing such as “A good example of this is” and “To illustrate,” and connect ideas more explicitly where needed. For instance, the move from older readers’ preferences to libraries could explain how these examples together show that print retains a distinct role. The reference in “those with online materials” is also slightly unclear; naming the type of libraries or collections would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including phrases such as “cost-effectiveness,” “digital technology,” “printed journals,” and “paper-based book.” These choices help communicate the contrast between online and print formats. There are also attempts at more formal vocabulary, although some combinations are unnatural or imprecise: “highly addressed” would be more naturally expressed as “widely discussed,” and “online mode of learning” does not accurately capture reading newspapers and books. Spelling errors such as “usefull” and “conitunue” are noticeable, while “access to usefull information” uses an unsuitable word pattern. Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than adding formality for its own sake, and proofread spelling and word forms. Meaning remains clear despite these slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including the concession in “although the advancement of digital tools comes with a list of advantages” and the relative clause “individuals living abroad could watch everything happening in their home countries online.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the overall argument is easy to understand. Some grammatical errors remain. For example, “despite of technological advancements” should be “despite technological advancements,” and “can easily access to usefull information” should be “can easily access useful information.” The phrase “the feeling holding a paper-based book” needs a structure such as “the feeling of holding a paper-based book.” There are also article and agreement issues in “a good example of this is, majority” and “a plenty of printed journals.” More consistent control of these patterns would strengthen accuracy while preserving your sentence variety.
