IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is believed that in the projection people will not prefer to buy printed newspaper or books beacuse they will be able to read it online for free. I disagree with this statement because printed books causes less eye strain and not everyone has a device or reliable internet.

One of the reasons is that reading through printed books and newspaper is more beneficial for health because it causes less eye strain and easier to concentrate. People who read from hard copy books can concentrate better and have less chances to be affacted from headache. For instance, someone who is reading online can be distracted easily from continuosly notifications from social media apps and they are more likely to get headache and eye strain as compared to someone who reads from printed books.

Another reason is that everyone cannot afford digital device or internet . Most of the people are going from financial burden and they are not able to purchase a device, which can be out of their budget. Furthermore, most of the things in the internet are not for free consumer have to pay for the services. For instance, many students has tight budget and cannot afford to buy expensive device and internet just for reading and even if they afford these things but most of the time books are not free of cost.

In conclusion, I believe that in future people will still prefer to read hard-copy books as compared to soft-books because it keeps person more concentrated and helps to save them from eye strain and not every person can afford it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you disagree that printed books and newspapers will disappear, and you give two relevant reasons—reduced eye strain and limited access to devices or reliable internet. Both body paragraphs include explanations and examples, such as online notifications distracting readers and students being unable to afford devices. This addresses the task well. However, some support is less fully developed: the health paragraph makes broad claims about concentration and headaches without qualification, while the affordability paragraph shifts to whether online content is free rather than explaining how this affects future demand for print. To strengthen the response, develop each reason with more precise explanation and address the claim about free online reading more directly throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion that restates your view. The progression from health effects to affordability is easy to follow, and signposts such as “One of the reasons,” “Another reason,” and “In conclusion” help readers navigate the argument. Some linking is mechanical, however, and the second paragraph’s “Furthermore” introduces a related but somewhat abrupt point about online services not being free. References such as “it” in the introduction are not always clear, and the conclusion repeats the main points rather than drawing them together. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make links between claims and examples more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your argument, including “eye strain,” “reliable internet,” “financial burden,” and “hard-copy books.” These choices show an attempt to discuss the issue beyond very basic terms. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “beacuse,” “affacted,” and “continuosly.” Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “in the projection,” “less chances,” and “free consumer.” Repetition of “books,” “device,” and “afford” limits the range. Aim to learn accurate collocations and vary repeated terms—for example, use “in the future,” “less likely to suffer,” and “readers do not always have to pay.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a reason clause in “because printed books causes less eye strain” and a conditional structure beginning “even if they afford these things.” The main ideas remain understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries are noticeable. For example, “printed books causes” should use a plural verb, “many students has” needs a plural verb, and “most of the things in the internet are not for free consumer have to pay” needs clearer punctuation or a linking word between its clauses. There is also some awkward control of pronouns and sentence structure. Check subject–verb agreement and divide long sentences into complete, clearly connected clauses.
