IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In today's rapidly evolving world, technological advancement have made it easier for people to access information, and due to that it is widely belife that sooner printed newspapers or books will be replaced with e-learning gageds. This essay will shed light on significant importance of both viewpoints before explaining why I believe that technology advancement is essential thus hardcopies are equally important.
To begin with, in many people's opinion, online reading is more advanced and an easy accessible way to read. The reason behind it is that people can save time. In less time, they can search for books and read whatever they want. For example, the National Library of Qatar has a counter where you can type the catagory of books and get it eaisly.
On the other hand, some people believe that printed newspapers and books are much better than digital versions. This is because printed materials help preserve traditional reading habits, and giving digital devices to young children may not be safe. For instance, children may access inappropriate content online because not all websites are suitable for their age.
In conclusion, technological advancements have had a significant impact on the way people read. Some people believe that, in the future, printed newspapers and books may become less popular because people will be able to access a wide range of reading materials online, sometimes free of charge. I believe that technological advancements have a positive impact on our lives; however, digital content should be appropriate for the user's age. At the same time, printed materials still have their own importance.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You present a relevant position: technology is important, but printed materials remain valuable. The response also recognises reasons for online reading and for retaining print, such as convenience and concerns about children’s access to unsuitable content. However, the task asks how far you agree or disagree with the prediction that nobody will buy print because online material will be free. Your position is not fully consistent: the introduction says hard copies are “equally important,” while the conclusion mainly discusses age-appropriate digital content. The claim about free access is mentioned only briefly, and the example of the Qatar library does not clearly show that people will stop buying print. Develop your degree of agreement and support it with more directly relevant explanations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a clear overall arrangement, with an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs and a conclusion. “To begin with” and “On the other hand” help signal the shift between viewpoints, and the main ideas are generally easy to follow. Some connections, however, are mechanical or unclear. The introduction promises to explain the “significant importance of both viewpoints,” but the body paragraphs do not develop the comparison in a balanced way. The example about the library follows the point about saving time, yet its link to the future of buying printed materials is not made explicit. The conclusion also repeats broad points rather than drawing together the reasons. Make each paragraph’s central claim and its relevance to your position clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of vocabulary, including “technological advancements,” “preserve traditional reading habits,” “digital versions” and “inappropriate content.” These expressions help communicate the topic, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several inaccurate word choices, collocations and spelling errors reduce precision: “e-learning gageds,” “easy accessible,” “catagory” and “eaisly” are examples. “Technology advancement” is also repeated, and “read whatever they want” is quite general. Aim for accurate, natural phrases and check spelling carefully; for example, describe online reading as “convenient and accessible” and specify that readers can “access a wide range of titles.” This would make the vocabulary more controlled and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a reason clause (“This is because…”) and a subordinate clause about children accessing unsuitable content. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In the opening, “technological advancement have” has a subject–verb agreement problem; “it is widely belife that” also contains an incorrect construction. The phrase “and giving digital devices to young children may not be safe” does not fit grammatically with the preceding clause, and “technology advancement is essential thus hardcopies are equally important” needs clearer sentence boundaries and linking. Review agreement, clause structure and punctuation, especially when joining two complete ideas. More accurate control of these patterns would make your argument easier to read.
