IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that in the future, no one will purchase printed newspapers or books because they will have access to everything through online platforms without paying any money. I disagree with this approach because people get used to these habits, and uneducated people may lack the knowledge to access them.

On the one hand, one major reason is that individuals purchase printed newspapers to gather information about what is happening around the world, which includes facts and figures. Additionally, they buy books from stores, which they can feel with their hands and are easy to read when compared with online sites. As people are used to these routines regularly, it is difficult for them to switch to other online platforms. For instance, people in rural areas may not have proper internet facilities, so they adopt the habit of reading newspapers or books. Thereafter, they become more dependent on these articles and books.

On the other hand, some people may lack the knowledge to access online platforms because they may not have proper educational background to surf the internet and get relevant information about world news or specific data. Subsequently, these people also lack patience for waiting in front of a computer or mobile phone; as a result, they choose things that can be touched and felt. For example, some people buy magazines in a bookstore instead of downloading them from online websites and wasting their time on them.

In conclusion, I strongly disagree with this statement because people are already familiarised with their purchasing habits, and people from uneducated backgrounds may not have a proper idea of online usage.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you disagree that printed materials will disappear. You address both sides of the issue by discussing the convenience and familiarity of print, limited internet access in rural areas, and barriers to using online platforms. These are relevant reasons, but some are not fully developed. For example, the claim that people are “used to these routines” would be stronger with a clearer explanation of why familiarity would outweigh free online access. The point about people lacking educational background is also broad and risks treating a diverse group as one. Develop each reason with a more precise explanation or example, and address more directly whether online access to everything is realistic. This would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting reasons, and a conclusion that restates your position. The contrast between “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” helps readers follow the organisation, and examples are placed alongside the relevant points. This coherent arrangement meets the expected standard, while some links between ideas remain mechanical or unclear. In the first body paragraph, “Thereafter” does not clearly show how the previous point leads to greater dependence on printed materials. The second paragraph also moves from lack of online knowledge to impatience without explaining the connection. Use more precise transitions and make the relationship between each claim and its supporting explanation explicit. This would create smoother progression and more flexible cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to discuss the topic, including terms such as “online platforms,” “internet facilities,” and “relevant information.” There is also some attempt to vary expression, for example, “gather information” and “dependent on these articles and books.” However, several choices are awkward or imprecise, which limits the naturalness and precision of the argument. “Uneducated people” is an overly broad label; “people with limited digital literacy” would be more specific. “Proper educational background” and “proper idea of online usage” are also vague, while “wasting their time on them” does not clearly express the intended point. Aim for accurate collocations and avoid repeating general terms such as “people” and “proper.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “because they may not have proper educational background” and a result clause introduced by “so.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and punctuation generally supports the structure. Some grammatical errors remain. In “may not have proper educational background,” the singular countable noun needs an article (“a proper educational background”). The sentence beginning “Additionally, they buy books from stores, which they can feel…” has an unclear relative clause: “which” appears to refer to stores rather than books. Recast it as “books, which they can hold and read easily.” Continue checking articles and ensure that relative pronouns clearly refer to the intended noun.
