IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the future nobody will purchase printed newespapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. I strongly agree with this statement because nowadays online websites are giving free access to the public.

On the first hand, nowadays modern technology has a great influence on the public. All newspapers including daily starts, international news and other news and all books are available on some online websites in the internet. People can easily get the access and they can learn their favourite article without spending any amount of money. For example in Bangladesh, every people read newspapers and books through online websites without investing any amount of money or buying newspapers or books. As a result, modern technologies are influencing people more widely.

On the other hand, a particular age group may face difficulties through the impact of modern technology. Many elder people don't know how to use internet or how to find different books and newspapers in online. That's why the better solution is to buy newspapers or books so that they can read. For example in India, newspapers and books are available in library or a shop for all ages specially for elder people and they can also read resell them after finishing their reading. Thus, elder people can buy them from the shop by investing a significant amount of money.

From my perspective, I believe that it has some advantages for young public and some disadvantages for elderly people but we may see the extinction of newspaper or books in future when the world will become more upgraded.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear in the introduction: you strongly agree that free online access will replace printed materials. You also address a counterpoint by noting that some older people may struggle with the internet, and the Bangladesh and India examples are relevant to your discussion. However, the response does not fully develop the claim in the prompt: it focuses mainly on access and age, without considering whether online content will truly be free for everyone or why people might continue to prefer print. The conclusion also shifts to a qualified view—there are advantages and disadvantages—so your final position is less consistent than your opening. Develop and explain each main reason more fully, and make the conclusion match your stated extent of agreement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The use of “On the first hand” and “On the other hand” signals the intended contrast, while examples help readers follow the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, with repeated references to online access and technology rather than a clear sequence of distinct supporting points. Some connections are also unclear: the paragraph about older people ends by saying they can buy printed materials, but does not explain how this affects the prediction that print will disappear. Use more precise links between claims and examples, and ensure each paragraph develops one central point before moving to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “free access,” “modern technology,” “elder people,” and “extinction,” and the reader can generally understand your meaning. There are also attempts to use more formal expressions, such as “a significant amount of money.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, including “daily starts,” “learn their favourite article,” and “in the internet.” “Investing” is also repeated where “spending” or “paying” would be more natural. These choices sometimes make the argument less precise, even though the main ideas remain understandable. Build a wider set of accurate expressions for digital access, reading habits, and the continued appeal of print, and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, for example, “Many elder people don't know how to use internet or how to find different books and newspapers in online.” The response is divided into sentences and paragraphs, and its main meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors in articles, agreement, prepositions, and sentence construction occur often enough to make some sentences awkward. Examples include “every people read,” “the access,” and “newspapers and books are available … in online.” The final sentence, “when the world will become more upgraded,” also shows difficulty controlling tense in a future time clause. Practise accurate article use and agreement, and revise complex sentences so that their clauses connect clearly; this will improve control without sacrificing variety.
