IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some argue that in the future, online reading will be available freely and won't buy the printed newspapers or books. I firmly agree with the arguement because, living spaces are getting small and to a some extend it is a way of protecting the nature.
At present, people are living in small houses, apartments compared to the past. It is due to the increment of population worldwide. Therefore, living spaces are getting smaller and smaller everyday. Buying books and storing them after reading does take a lot of space in a house. For instance, I used to buy a lot of adventure books when I was a child. However, due to lack of space, I had to get rid of almost all the books. If I had bought to read online through the internet, I might still have access to those books. Nowadays, we have to buy the books and newspapers online. However, I believe, in the future, printed versions of a book or a newspapers will be available free of charge.
Papers are made out of trees. In order to make printed versions of books and newspapers, people have to make papers by cutting down some trees. There are number of companies encourage people to turn to e-paper instead of using physical papers due to the significant impact to the nature. For example, In Sri Lanka, a book company called Gunasena initiate a new online reading platform. It does contain a few free books for people, who are registaring. That is a great way of influencing people to buy paperless books and newspapers.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that online reading will be available free of charge in the future and paper based books and newspapers will vanish from the face of earth becuase, living spaces are getting smaller day by day and it is a way of protecting environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the introduction: you firmly agree that online reading will replace printed books and newspapers, and you return to this view in the conclusion. You give two relevant reasons—limited living space and environmental protection—and support them with a personal example and the Gunasena platform in Sri Lanka. This addresses the task, but the reasons are not developed equally. The space argument explains why people may prefer digital books, yet it does not fully establish why online reading will be free or why nobody will buy print. Similarly, the environmental example shows that a platform offers some free books, but the link to a future without printed publications needs clearer explanation. Develop these predictions and acknowledge that some readers may still prefer print.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion that restates your position. Sequencing within the paragraphs is generally understandable, and examples help connect claims to supporting details. However, some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Therefore” connects population growth to smaller homes, but the relationship could be explained more precisely. The shift from “we have to buy the books and newspapers online” to the prediction that printed versions will be free is confusing, as it changes the subject from online purchases to print. Referencing such as “It does contain” also makes the connection to the platform less smooth. Use clearer transitions and make each paragraph’s reasoning progress step by step.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your ideas, including “living spaces,” “printed versions,” “free of charge,” and “protecting the environment.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “significant impact” and “online reading platform.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, which limits precision: “increment of population” would be more naturally expressed as population growth, and “protecting the nature” is not idiomatic. Spelling errors such as “arguement,” “registaring,” and “becuase” also reduce control. Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than more elaborate wording, and proofread spelling. More precise vocabulary for predicting changes in publishing would also help you express the argument clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a conditional sentence (“If I had bought to read online…”) and clauses introduced by “because” and “due to.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “won't buy the printed newspapers” needs a subject such as “people,” while “a newspapers” has incorrect article and number agreement. In “There are number of companies encourage people,” the noun phrase and clause structure need correction, and “a book company… initiate” has a tense-agreement problem. Punctuation around “because” is also sometimes misplaced. Practise accurate articles, plural forms, and verb agreement, while retaining the complex sentence patterns you attempt.
