IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, people are more attracted towards technology and it's inventions. Technology has developed different inventions which makes people life easier. Social media is one of them where they can find whatever they want. This is why in future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books rather they prefer to read it through online without paying. I completely agree with this statement because it is more convenient and cheaper.

Firstly, today's people are very busy with their work and personal life. They have a busy schedule where they could hardly manage their time in other activities. In such situation, social media has helped them a lot. People can stay home and read whatever they want to in their phone. Also, it saves time as they don't have to go to the store and buy paper or books. For example, a person who works everyday doesn't have time to go to the store can get it through online for free.

Similarly, it motivates so many people around the world. Those who doesn't have money to buy can get it in online which enhance people learning skills. Additionally, everyone can afford it which makes it more popular even in public. In addition to this, we can find those books with various eye-catching pictures which makes the reader to read it. For instance, if we see something different, we try to get into it which help to learn something new.

In conclusion, with the increasing demand of social media and innovations, newspapers or books are replace with the online reading materials.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

Your position is clear: you completely agree, and you give reasons related to convenience, cost and access. The examples about reading on a phone and people who cannot afford books are relevant. However, the response addresses the claim only partially: it does not fully examine whether printed books and newspapers will disappear, and the point about eye-catching pictures is not clearly connected to why people would stop buying print. Several ideas are asserted rather than explained, so the argument remains under-developed. The response is also one word below the required 250-word minimum; the eight words copied from the task prompt were not counted. Develop the reasons with clearer explanation and a more direct comparison between online and printed reading.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs give reasons, and a conclusion restates the position. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “Similarly,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the structure. However, some links are mechanical or do not show the relationship between ideas precisely. For example, “Similarly” introduces a point about affordability, which is related but not quite parallel to the previous point about saving time. The reference in “it motivates so many people” is also unclear, and the final paragraph introduces no developed summary. To strengthen progression, make each paragraph focus on one reason and use linking phrases that accurately express how each point relates to the previous one.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “convenient,” “busy schedule,” “afford,” and “learning skills.” There are also attempts to express ideas beyond basic statements, such as “increasing demand” and “eye-catching pictures.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or combinations sound unnatural, including “attracted towards technology,” “get it in online,” and “replace with the online reading materials.” Repetition of “people,” “read,” and “online” also limits flexibility. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the general argument, but they make some points less precise. Build a wider set of natural collocations for digital access, cost, and printed media, and check word forms and phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple sentences and some longer structures, including clauses beginning with “where,” “because,” and “which.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but there are some recurring errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “inventions which makes” should have a plural verb, while “Those who doesn't have money” needs agreement between the subject and verb. In “a person who works everyday doesn't have time to go to the store can get it,” the clauses are not joined clearly. The conclusion also needs a passive form such as “are replaced.” Practise checking subject–verb agreement and building longer sentences with clear clause boundaries; this will improve accuracy while preserving your attempts at complex structures.
