IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Printed newpapers or books are the kept source of information which are present in hard form. People pay so much for this medium but nowadays, technology is too far, everything is on one click.

Printed books and newspapers are traditional mediums, it needs a dedication, place or cost to have it, in early years people dedicated a special place for keeping books for their source of information, but advancement of technology have replaced it, now people love to carry less items physcially.

E-books as well as e-newspapers are widely used just because people can carry them anywhere, anytime without any condition, online books contain several features which help any individual to understand the content of difficult words, auto translator and chatbot feature is installled so that we can ask our queries which definetely saves the time as well as effort by skiimming through dictionary.

Moreover, this generation is so impatient, they feel so hard to carry books and newspaper along with them, so the replacement of this thing is online content which is usually free sourced, there are multiple websites where books are free and you can freely access them without any charges and you may download them in your phone for later use which is the main point of view acording to this generation, by putting on live example of myself, i love to read comics but they were too expensive so i found multiple websites where i get all of them freely and i never spent a penny of it, so i love e-books and newspaper.

In my opinion, i totally agreed with the following statement just because of the following reasons which i mentioned above with supporting details and i doubles down on it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you agree that online access will replace printed books and newspapers, and you give relevant reasons, including portability, digital tools such as translation, and free websites. The personal example about finding comics online also supports your view. This addresses the task, but the discussion is uneven: the advantages of digital reading are explained in some detail, while the claim that people will no longer buy printed material is not examined fully. In particular, the prompt’s prediction about the future and the idea that online reading will be free could be qualified or supported with broader reasoning. Develop these points and acknowledge a possible limitation, such as readers who prefer print or paid online content.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has an overall progression from describing print, to explaining digital advantages, to giving a personal example and stating your opinion. Paragraph breaks help separate these stages, and connectors such as “Moreover” and “In my opinion” signal relationships between ideas. However, some links are mechanical or unclear: “the following reasons which I mentioned above” repeats earlier material rather than advancing the conclusion, and “this thing” has an imprecise reference. The second paragraph also combines several points about cost, storage and technological change without a clear focus. Give each paragraph one main purpose, use more precise referencing, and make the conclusion briefly synthesise your strongest reasons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary, including “traditional mediums,” “advancement of technology,” “auto translator,” and “free sourced,” and the reader can generally understand your meaning. There are also attempts to discuss specific digital features rather than relying only on basic terms. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “kept source of information,” “hard form,” “carry less items physically,” and “putting on live example.” Spelling errors, including “newpapers,” “physcially,” and “definetely,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural academic collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe print as a “traditional source” and say that readers “carry fewer physical items.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “which” and explanations introduced by “just because.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main message is usually understandable. However, errors in agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence boundaries recur. For example, “Printed books and newspapers are traditional mediums, it needs” joins two clauses incorrectly and uses a singular pronoun for plural nouns; “advancement of technology have replaced it” has a subject–verb agreement problem. The long sentence beginning “there are multiple websites” also contains several ideas joined without clear punctuation. Practise separating independent clauses, checking singular and plural agreement, and proofreading verb forms and articles.
