IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is argued that the printed newspapers and books are totally optional in the future because they get all the material online without paying. I have a mixed opinion on this statement beacuse some time printed things are useful and on the other side some time it is not useful.

I totally disagree with this statement because the online things is free this is wrong argue at that time the online reading and other material is paying in many websities. Many people cannot afford this such as journals books, new books and the high quality journalism etc.and also the quality of the free material is not high quality and good.

Secondly, many people are still prefer the printed books and newspaper. because they are not enjoy the screen time .Beacuse the printing things cannot need charger or the internet access they can read this anywhere and also the feeling of collecting the books rather than reading online.the printed books are more reiable and permanet than online .for example in schools students learn through printed books rather than online tablets because they are more disturbing.

However, it is ture that the online material is increasing and the markets of the printed books and newspaper are shrink. Bescause the many people also the young generation is more prefer the online watching things rather than reading throuh printed material

In conclusion, the online material is reduce the cost of printing material but i disagree with this argue beacuse the material that the people want are given online and also offline it not mean that the people can connot grow . And also the high quality material are available online and offline and the printed books and newspapers get a loyal auideance.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You present a relevant position, especially when you say that you “totally disagree” because some online material requires payment and printed books remain useful. The points about screen fatigue, access without internet or charging, and students using printed books are also pertinent. However, the opening says you have a “mixed opinion,” which conflicts with your later firm disagreement, and the conclusion does not clearly resolve this inconsistency. Several claims are introduced but not fully explained: for example, you mention the growth of online reading and the decline of print markets without showing how this affects whether people will stop buying printed material. State your position consistently and develop fewer reasons with clearer explanation and examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, supporting paragraphs, a counterpoint beginning “However,” and a conclusion. This gives the reader some sense of organisation. However, progression within paragraphs is often difficult to follow because several ideas are joined together without clear relationships. The first body paragraph moves from paid websites to affordability and then to the quality of free material; these points need clearer sequencing. Connectors such as “Secondly” and “However” help, but “because” is repeated and sometimes introduces an incomplete or confusing link. The conclusion also repeats earlier points rather than drawing them together. Use one main idea per paragraph, explain its connection to your position, and use referencing and transitions more precisely.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “screen time,” “internet access,” “high quality journalism,” and “printed material.” These choices show an attempt to discuss both the advantages of print and the growth of online reading. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make meaning unclear, such as “the online things,” “the markets … are shrink,” and “a loyal auideance.” Spelling errors, including “beacuse,” “websities,” and “permanet,” are also noticeable and reduce accuracy. Build a more precise set of topic phrases and check spelling carefully. For example, distinguish between “free online content” and “paid subscriptions,” and use natural expressions such as “the print market is shrinking.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to use both simple and more extended sentences, including a reason clause in “because they are not enjoy the screen time” and a comparison introduced by “rather than.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some points difficult to understand. Examples include “the online things is free,” “many people are still prefer,” and “the printed books are more … than online,” where agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction need attention. Some sentences also run together, as in the paragraph about printed books, making the relationships between ideas unclear. Practise building accurate subject–verb patterns and complete sentences before adding clauses; then check punctuation and agreement during revision.
